The Albany Dutchmen defeated the Glens Falls Golden Eagles 3-2 at East Field on Saturday in a low scoring affair. The win is the third straight for Albany as they improve to 8-6 while the Golden Eagles fall to 7-7.
Pitching was the story for most of the game as Austin Chase (SUNY Albany) and Taylor Saucedo (Tacoma C.C.) both pitched very well for their respective clubs.
Chase earns his first win of the season, to even his record at 1-1 while Saucedo is dealt the loss, dropping to 1-2 this summer. Trevor Lacosse (Bryant) recorded his second save, in relief of the Dutchmen starter. Chase pitched 8 innings to get the win, allowing just two earned runs on six hits, fanning 10 in the process. In the losing effort, Saucedo went six innings giving up 1 earned run on two hits and striking out eight batters.
Albany struck first in this one, after a throwing error by Glens Falls catcher Chase Griffin allowed Mike Triller (Clemson) to reach second following a strikeout, a bunt single with two outs by Jon Mestas (Buffalo) plated Triller.
Glens Falls would answer back in the bottom of the fourth, with a leadoff solo shot from Ross Kivett (Kansas St.). The home run was the first of the season at East Field for the Golden Eagles.
The Dutchmen would take the lead for good in the top half of the sixth on the strength of an RBI single from Jared Martin (Cumberlands (KY). The single plated Morgan Phillips who had walked to leadoff the inning.
Adding an insurance run in the eighth, Albany went up 3-1 on a sacrifice fly by Zach Remillard (LaSalle Institute) off of Glens Falls reliever Neil Fryer (Siena).
The Golden Eagles would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the same inning, as back-to-back doubles by Griffin and Mike Vigliarolo (St. Louis) cut the lead to 3-2.
Cory Folk (Buffalo) retired Albany in order in the top of the ninth to give his team a chance to tie it in their final at bat.
The Golden Eagles would load the bases on a pair of walks issued by Lacosse to Kivett and Kevin Meyers (N.E. Oklahoma A&M) and a bunt single by Casey Rodrigue (LSU Eunice). Griffin came to the plate with a chance to win it, but fanned on a 3-2 pitch to end the game and secure the win for the visiting Dutchmen.
Both teams return to action tomorrow as Albany returns home to host Newark in a 5:05 start while Glens Falls travels to Cooperstown, with first pitch scheduled for 5 P.M.
