Durham Rallies Past Gwinnett, 6-5

DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls scored two runs off Gwinnett reliever Jay Chapman in the bottom of the ninth inning to spoil a G-Braves comeback bid with a 6-5 win in game three of the four game series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, North Carolina.

The G-Braves had battled back from an early two-run deficit to eventually take the lead in the top of the ninth, but could not hold the Bulls down in the bottom of the frame.

The game started quickly for the G-Braves. In the top of the first, a triple by second baseman Drew Sutton scored Luis Durango from first for a 1-0 lead. Durango had reached to lead off the game on an error by Durham starting pitcher Brian Augenstein. Sutton would later score on a single by DH Ernesto Mejia for a 2-0 lead.

However, the Bulls touched Gwinnett starter Julio Teheran for three runs on three hits in the bottom of the second. Teheran did not make it out of the inning, and Durham led 3-2 after two innings.

It was a rough outing for Teheran, the 2011 International League Most Valuable Pitcher. The right-hander allowed three runs, all earned on three hits, walked two and struck out one over 1.2 innings.

The Bulls added a run in the bottom of the fifth as center-fielder Brandon Guyer lead off with a solo homer to right-center off of Braves reliever Ben Swaggerty. The blast gave the Bulls a 4-2 lead.

The G-Braves got a run back in the top of the seventh off of Durham lefty Jon Gaub when Durango smashed a two-out triple to right-center scoring shortstop Josh Wilson from first.

That set the stage for a wild ninth inning.

Trailing 4-3, the G-Braves scored two in the top of the inning off of Bulls reliever Romulo Sanchez. Left-fielder Cory Harrilchak began the inning with a walk; Wilson was then hit by a pitch. They both moved up on a sacrifice bunt by catcher J.C. Boscan. Durango then beat out an infield hit scoring Harrilchak to tie the game at four. Right-fielder Jordan Parraz then send a ball to the mound that hit Sanchez in the foot enabling Wilson to score the go ahead run from third.

However, in the bottom of the inning, Durham shortstop Tim Beckham was walked by Chapman and moved to second on a groundout to short by Guyer. DH Matt Mangini then tied the game with a single to center scoring Beckham from second.

Jesus Feliciano replaced Mangini at first as a pinch runner. He would then score the winning run from first when first baseman Leslie Anderson doubled in the gap in left-center.

Chapman (L, 0-1) suffered his first loss of the season. Durham reliever Cesar Ramos picked up the win (W, 1-0).

The G-Braves and Durham Bulls conclude the four game series Sunday, April 8 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Right-hander Eric Junge will make his first start of the year for Gwinnett.
