July 9, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Lake County Fielders News Release

ZION, IL- Jeff Dunbar hit two home runs and Zach Ward pitched a complete game shutout to lead the Lake County Fielders (17-26) to a 5-0 victory over the Rockford RiverHawks (20-25) in front of 3,127 Fielders' fans at Fielders' Stadium in Zion.

Dunbar opened the scoring by hooking a long solo home run down the left field line in the second inning and followed it up with a two-run home run, which also scored Josh Short, in the fourth inning.

Dunbar got things going again for the Fielders in the sixth inning with a lead-off double. Aaron Cone and Anthony Esquer followed with singles, with Esquer's scoring Dunbar for his third run of the game, ending the night for RiverHawks' starter Brett Durand (4-4). Chuck Lukanen relieved him and induced a fly out to right from Kyle Higgins, but Joseph Ramos dropped a single into shallow right field to score Cone.

This season, Dunbar now has eight home runs, which is second on the Fielders, and 25 RBI, which is third on the team.

Short extended his league-leading consecutive games on-base streak to 35 games with his sixth inning walk.

Ward (3-4) pitched his first complete game of the season, and the Fielders' third, and recorded a Lake County franchise record 13 strikeouts, breaking the previous record of eight, set by John Brownell last month. He gave up six hits and hit four batters, while throwing 126 pitches.

Ward now has 53 strikeouts this season, tied for most in the Northern League. The 13 strikeouts is also the most by any pitcher in a single game in the league this season.

The Fielders are next in action Saturday night at 4:45 pm for game two of the series with the RiverHawks. Lake County will send John Brownell (2-5, 4.17) against Kyle Ruwe (2-5, 5.02) at Fielders' Stadium in Zion. Stay after the game for a live performance from RockBand ADHD and an exciting fireworks extravaganza.
