Duluth's Hot Bats Overpowered in Extra Innings

The Duluth Huskies struck for 14 hits on Tuesday as the bats remained strong, but ultimately ran into too strong of a lineup in the Loggers who won by a run in a wild 10-inning ballgame.

After La Crosse scored in the first, Duluth took an early lead scoring five runs and batting around in the third including an RBI single by Chris Gilbody (Georgetown College) who would score himself.

But the Loggers fought back, scoring twice in the fourth and then four more runs an inning later to take the lead. Duluth wouldn't quit, though, and scored four of their own in the seventh, including a two-RBI fielder's choice by Nick Sogard (Loyola Marymount) manufactured by speed on the base paths.

When Duluth trailed by a run, they needed to start a rally in the bottom of the ninth, and they did. Sam Baier (Augustana) started with a one-out single, then reached third on a passed ball. Tony Monroy (Georgetown College) followed with a walk, and La Crosse made a bold decision to intentionally walk Augie Isaacson (Friends) to load the bases. With two outs, Chris Gilbody was able to draw a walk to score the tying run.

However, the Huskies let up another run in the tenth, and couldn't create any more magic, ultimately falling by a score of 11-10.

Despite the loss, the Huskies maintain a tie with the Madison Mallards for the best overall record in the Northwoods League at 29-14 and remain in second place for the second half in the division at 5-2.

The Husky bats were strong, as nine different Huskies got a hit. Michael McCann (Texas) did not but walked twice and was hit by a pitch. Baier added three hits as well as a walk and scored three times. And Augie Isaacson (Friends University) had another fantastic day that fans have come to expect, gathering two hits, two walks and a stolen base.

Duluth will have a chance to cut into the second half deficit with a rematch against La Crosse tomorrow. First pitch will be at 6:35 p.m. at Wade Stadium, with Andrew Stout (Liberty) pitching and hoping to extend his 4-0 record.
