Alexandria Beetles News Release

Alexandria, MN - A promising start turned into late disappointment on Sunday afternoon at Knute Nelson as the Alexandria Beetles (2-3) dropped a rubber game to the Duluth Huskies (3-2) in the final of a five game season-opening home stand 8-3.

Nick Berhel pitched four solid innings for the Beetles, striking out five and allowing just an unearned run, but after the Beetles built a 3-1 lead after three innings, they failed to score again. Austin Perez (1-0) earned the victory, going 6.2 innings for Duluth while Scott Sanderson (0-1) took the loss in relief.

A pair of singles by Ben Moore and David Garcia followed by a Jon Traetow sacrifice fly in the 2nd gave the Beetles a 1-0 lead. Duluth tied the game in the top of the 3rd with a pair of singles and a throwing error on a stolen base attempt but Alexandria rallied for two more in the bottom of the inning. With two outs and Dylan Raper at second, Alexandria-native Dalton Leuschke lined a RBI double down the right field line and Johnny Tolson chased him home with a single to left to give Alexandria a 3-1 lead.

But Perez grew stronger as the game progressed, retiring nine in a row after a leadoff single by Garcia in the 4th. Duluth tied the game in the 6th against reliever Corey Fitzgerald with a pair of singles and a pair of errors, one on a ground ball to second and the second on another errant throw by catcher Ben Moore.

The Huskies took their first lead of the night an inning later. Austin Dubberly lined a routine single to right center but took second when the Alexandria outfielders were slow to the ball. He stole third and scored on a one out sacrifice fly for the eventual game-winning run.

Alexandria threatened with two in scoring position and two outs in the eighth but failed to score and the Huskies blew the game open in the ninth. A pair of walks and a single loaded the bases with one out, and Max Duval hit his second homerun in as many days, a towering grand slam to centerfield, to make the final score 8-3.

The Beetles take the road for the first time this year with a two game trip to Thunder Bay beginning Monday night at 7pm EST. The Border Cats are 1-4 on the year.
