Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ, August 16-The Long Island Ducks, down to their final out and their final strike, scored two runs in the ninth inning to beat the Newark Bears, 7-6, Saturday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
In the fateful top half of the ninth inning, Bears reliever Hut Smith retired the first two batters and then walked Justin Davies on a three-and-one pitch. Ducks shortstop Elvis Pena then followed with a single to center field to put runners on first and second with two outs. Former Major Leaguer Kimera Bartee was the next batter and Smith ran the count to two balls and two strikes before Bartee lined a single into left field to score Davies and when Danny Clyburn misplayed the ball in left, Pena scored all the way from first base with the eventual winning run.
Smith (0-3) blew the save and took the loss for the Bears. He allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits. He struck out two batters and walked one. Bears starter Jim Bullinger tossed 5.1 effective innings, allowing three runs (only one of which was earned) on four hits. Bullinger struck out five batters and walked two.
The game featured four lead changes. The Bears grabbed a 6-5 advantage in the bottom of the seventh inning when Ryan Minor was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and reliever Luis Andujar threw a wild pitch to force in another run.
Juan Lorenzo and Eddie Lara each had three hits for Newark. Lorenzo had a two-run triple in the fifth inning. Jay Laflair and Wil Quintana each had two hits for the Bears.
Long Island was led by Rusty McNamara, who was 3-4 with an RBI, and Bartee, who was 3-4 with 2 runs-batted-in.
