Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Central Islip, NY- September 2, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (27-25, 53-69) were defeated by the Long Island Ducks (27-25, 73-49) 12-0 at Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip, New York on Wednesday night to even up the three game series between cross-sound rivals at a victory apiece. The Bluefish have now been shutout a total of seven times on the season.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Robert Carson (5-3) suffered the loss, lasting five innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, walking two, striking out six, and surrendering two home runs. Long Island Starting Pitcher Darin Downs (4-4) picked up the victory with six scoreless innings while giving up just three hits, striking out seven and not walking a batter.
The Ducks scored the first run of the ballgame in the home half of the third inning off Carson on a run-scoring single to center field off the bat of Fehlandt Lentini. Long Island would take a 3-0 edge in the fifth on back-to-back solo home runs by Elmer Reyes (his first as a member of the flock) and Lentini.
Long Island would break the game wide open in the sixth inning, sending 13 men to the plate, picking up nine runs on six hits, and just like that the lead was extended to 12-0. Reyes plated two with a double, Lentini and Delta Cleary, Jr. followed with RBI base knocks of their own, and former Bluefish Sean Burroughs drove in two more runs with a single to make it 9-0. Anthony Vega finished off the big rally with a bases-clearing double and the rout was on. The nine runs given up was a season-high for most allowed in a single inning by the 'Fish pitching staff, surpassing the previous total of eight runs surrendered against the Somerset Patriots in an 11-0 seven inning loss in game one of a day/night doubleheader at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater Township, New Jersey on May 20th. Four Long Island pitchers combined to hold the Bluefish scoreless on the evening while striking out nine and not issuing a walk. Welington Dotel led the way for Bridgeport with two hits in the losing effort, extending his hitting streak to 15 consecutive games, matching a season-best which was also set between June 29th and July 16th.
Bridgeport closes out the 2015 Ferry Cup Series series with the Long Island Ducks in the Empire State on Thursday night. The Bluefish return to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Tuesday, September 8th when they welcome in the Sugar Land Skeeters for a three-game midweek series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Come out to watch a Grandma Beauty Pageant in honor of Silver Sluggers Program. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a Bluefish Alternate Logo Collector's Pin.
