ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (May 10, 2003) – Long Island starter Denny Harriger stymied Surf hitters to lead the Ducks over Atlantic City, 8-2, Saturday evening in front of 1,525 at the Sandcastle.

Long Island jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning after an RBI double by Doug Jennings that plated leadoff man Justin Davies, who reached on a single. Two batters later, former Major Leaguer Mark Whiten laced a single that scored Davies and advanced to second on an error by Surf right fielder Chad Gambill.

Derrick Gibson singled to bring home Whiten for Long Island's third run.

The Ducks tallied two more runs in the third and one in the fourth, which proved to be more than enough for Harriger (1-1), who tossed seven innings and allowed one run on one hit while striking out five and walking one.

Long Island tacked on two more runs in the ninth off RBI singles by Patrick Lennon and Whiten to extend its lead to six runs.

Surf starter Tighe Brown (0-2) took the loss, allowing six runs, four earned, on seven hits while walking two.

Atlantic City scored its first run in the fourth inning off a sacrifice fly by Trey Beamon that scored Vernon Spearman, who walked and advanced to third on a double by Ric Johnson.

Gambill added a solo home run to lead off the eighth inning for the Surf.

Atlantic City dropped to 3-6 on the year while the Ducks improved to 6-3.

The Surf and the Ducks will conclude their series on Sunday, May 11, at 1:35 p.m., at the Sandcastle. Dave Carroll (1-0) will take to the mound for the Surf to face Long Island's Jason Navarro (0-1). Mother's Day Visors will be given out to the first 1,000 women age 18 and older, sponsored by NovaCare.
