Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y., May 14, 2003) â Long Island Ducks team officials today announced a joint venture with Island Harvest and WALK 97.5 FM to combine forces for three food drives during the 2003 baseball season. The first food drive is Sunday, May 25 before the Ducks versus Bridgeport Bluefish contest. They will be followed by food drives on July 2 and August 31.
"We know we can count on Ducks fans to make a difference," says Jaslyn Alicea, Ducks community relations manager. "Citibank Park is an outstanding vehicle for Island Harvest to raise awareness of their efforts while making a dent in Long Island's hunger problem."
Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable items like canned goods, paper products and diapers. People will be able to drop off items at the designated areas outside the gates of Citibank Park where Island Harvest volunteers will be set up. All food and products donated to Island Harvest are used for Long Island residents.
Island Harvest, founded in 1992, rescues surplus nutritious foods from over 500 commercial food donors and collects canned and packaged goods from food drives in order to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island. Island Harvest rescued approximately 3 million pounds of food in 2001 with a value of more than $7 million.
The Long Island Ducks, entering their fourth year, play their home games at Citibank Park, located in Central Islip, N.Y. For further information, please visit www.liducks.com or call the public relations department at (631) 940-3825.
