Ducks break through for 3-1 win over Patriots

Bridgewater, NJ- The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 3-1 at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Sunday afternoon.

The Ducks got their first hits of the game off Patriots starter David Elder in the top of the seventh inning. Third baseman Ray Navarrete doubled and scored on a two-run home run by designated hitter Bucky Jacobsen (20) for a 2-0 lead.

Long Island added a run to the lead in the top of the eighth inning for a 3-0 advantage. Second baseman Elvis Pena singled and later scored on a throwing error after a ground out.

Somerset got on the board in the bottom of the eighth inning. Shortstop Kevin Nicholson doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Lou Lucca to cut the lead to 3-1.

Ducks starter Pete Hartmann (9-5) picked up the win allowing an earned run on three hits and ten strikeouts in eight innings pitched. Elder (1-4) suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs on three hits and seven strikeouts in 6.2 innings pitched. Cory Bailey earned his first save of the season for the Ducks with scoreless ninth inning pitched.

The 2006 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Friday, September 15th when the Patriots return to Commerce Bank Ballpark for a 7:05 pm game against the Newark Bears. Friday's game includes T-Shirts for the first 5,000 fans presented by Ford Edge and Youth Hockey Night.
