
Bears erase six-run deficit, beat Bluefish 10-8

NEWARK, NJ - September 10, 2006 - After trailing the Bridgeport Bluefish 6-0, the Newark Bears scored one run in the fifth, two in the sixth, two in the seventh, and five in the eighth to complete the comeback and win 10-8 Sunday afternoon at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. With the win, the Bears snapped their season long 13-game losing streak.
Center-fielder Anthony Sanders got the Bears on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning with a sacrifice-fly scoring left-fielder Al Benjamin. In the bottom of the sixth, catcher Victor Valencia belted a two-run home run for the his 15th of the season to cut the lead to 6-3. After the seventh inning, the Bears trailed by one run after a pair of RBI singles by right-fielder Will Pennyfeather and designated hitter Alexis Hernandez. Newark took the lead for good with five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning led by RBI singles by Pennyfeather, Valencia, and Benjamin.
Hernandez finished the game 4-for-4 with four singles, one run scored, and one RBI, and first baseman Victor Rodriguez, Pennyfeather, and Valencia each had two hits to lead the Bears offense. For the Bluefish, shortstop Deivi Cruz went 2-for-5 with an RBI single and a two-run home run (7), and designated hitter Willis Otanez went 3-for-4 with an RBI single, a solo home run, and a two-run home run, his seven and eighth of the season.
Jeremy Hill (6-5) earned the win after allowing one run on five hits in two innings pitched, while Jimmy Journal (4-4) took the loss surrendering five runs on four hits in 2/3 of an inning. Joey Cole picked up his 20th save of the season, tying him for first in the Atlantic League.
The Bears and Bluefish begin a three-game series at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, CT. on Tuesday, September 12, with first pitch scheduled at 7:05 pm.
