Central Islip, N.Y. - The Somerset Patriots (17-8) failed to finish off the weekend sweep of the Long Island Ducks (14-13) in an 8-2 loss Sunday afternoon at Bethpage Ballpark.
Somerset took a brief early lead in the first inning. Julio Borbon led off with a single, proceeded to steal a pair of bases and then scored on a Craig Massey RBI groundout.
The Ducks responded with a six-run second inning that chased starting pitcher Trevor Foss from the game. An Alec Sole two-run single, a run-scoring wild pitch and a two-out, three-run double from Lew Ford provided Long Island with a 6-1 lead.
Long Island added to their lead in the fourth on a two-out RBI single off the bat of Cody Puckett. The Patriots answered the next half inning on a run-scoring passed ball to bring the deficit back to five. The Ducks later topped off the scoring on a Travis Snider RBI single in the seventh.
Jair Jurrjens (2-2) earned the win after he allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits over five innings. Trevor Foss (1-2) yielded six runs on five hits over 1.2 innings to suffer the loss.
The Somerset Patriots will be off on Monday before heading over to Lancaster, Pennsylvania to open up a four-game series against the Lancaster Barnstormers on Tuesday. First pitch Tuesday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
The 2018 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford continues on the road until Friday, June 1st when the Patriots return to TD Bank Ballpark to take on the Road Warriors at 6:35 pm. For tickets, visit www.somersetpatriots.com.
