Duck Pond Unfriendly to Bullfrogs, Drop First to Mallards
June 3, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wis.- A four-run third inning by the Madison Mallards was too much of a climb for the Bullfrogs offense to make up. After scoring two runs in the eighth inning, Green Bay was blanked in the final inning and the Mallards won 4-2.
With a paid attendance of 5, 237 fans, Warner Park's "Duck Pond" was a beautiful 70 degrees from the first pitch to the end. Mike Ellenbest (Saginaw Valley State) dueled Mallards starter, Matt Bower (Washington State) and the game was scoreless through two and a half innings.
The tie was torn open in the bottom of the third when Logan Regnier (Central Michigan) lashed an RBI single to make it 1-0. With two runners aboard, Jean Ramirez's (Illinois State) belt to left-field was the fourth home run of the season for the Mallards, and it was 4-0 Madison through three completed frames.
Mallard's starter, LHP Mat Bower, had struck out 53 batters in 47 innings for Donnie Marbut's Cougars in the spring. Against the Bullfrogs Wednesday night, he struck out 10 batters in just five innings. He gave way to A.J. Bogucki (North Carolina) who went two innings of no-run baseball.
It looked like the Bullfrogs would be on their way to their first scoreless offensive performance until a two out rally was sparked by Caleb Ratzman (Illinois State) in the eighth. Ratzman walked, stole second, and scored after a misfire into centerfield by catcher Jean Ramirez. He has seven swipes on the campaign.
After Paul Jacobson (South Dakota) followed with a walk, he advanced to third from a hit-and-run Matt De La Rosa (Lenoir-Rhyne) single to right field. Jacobson scored on a wild pitch from reliever Anthony Gonsolin (St. Mary's College) and the Bullfrogs slashed the Mallards lead to 4-2.
Jack Silberman's two scoreless relief innings kept the deficit at a pair until the ninth, but Gonsolin stranded Tyler McDowell (Washington State) on the base paths and gave the Mallards their league-leading eighth win of the Northwoods League season.
At 3-5, Green Bay starts RHP Alex Martinez tomorrow at 6:35PM in an attempt to win two of three on the mid-week road trio. After he allowed five runs in two innings to blow a save against St. Cloud, he blanked Lakeshore on May 31st in a lone inning of relief.
