Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA-After being frustrated by sensational goaltending the night prior, the Dubuque Fighting Saints offense was the story of a physical Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Final. Seven different Fighting Saints scored to lead Dubuque to a 7-3 victory over the Muskegon Lumberjacks on Saturday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center. Dubuque tied the best-of-five series, 1-1, heading into Game 3 and Game 4 next weekend in Muskegon.
One night after Muskegon goaltender Eric Schierhorn stopped 44 shots and propelled the Lumberjacks to a Game 1 victory, Dubuque was able to solve the netminder with three goals in the first period. After Mark Petaccio scored to give Muskegon a 1-0 lead early, Dubuque's Seamus Malone, Brett Boeing and Evan Smith all scored in a four-minute span.
Malone struck on a back-door tap in courtesy of a great pass from Robby Jackson across the crease at 12:04. Three minutes later Boeing scored on the power play, banking a bad-angle shot off Schierhorn and in for his second goal of the playoffs. Just over a minute later at 16:56, Evan Smith scored a highlight reel goal, maneuvering the puck across the slot and beating Schierhorn on the backhand to make it 3-1 Dubuque.
The second period saw the offensive fireworks continue as the two teams combined for five goals. Dubuque notched three of the goals, with the first coming from Nathan Sucese shorthanded. In a similar play to Sucese's goal the night prior, Malone held the puck on the right wing and fed Sucese for an easy tap-in in the slot at 5:13 to make it 4-1 Dubuque. Just 59 seconds later, Muskegon made it 4-2 with a power play goal from Corey Schueneman to cut the lead again.
The scoring frenzy continued with three more goals in just 1:26. Hayden Shaw scored at 8:24 for Dubuque, but Muskegon quickly responded with a redirect goal from Tom Marchin at 9:19. Dubuque answered to regain the three-goal lead at 9:50. Jacob Benson notched his second goal of the playoffs, flipping a backhander over Schierhorn to make it 6-3.
In the third period, the game took a physical turn. Mitchell Smith scored the lone goal of the period on a slap shot at 6:32, but the remainder of the period kept the officials busy. Muskegon was handed 71 minutes in penalties to Dubuque's 46 before the game was said and done.
The series turns to Muskegon next weekend. Game 3 is Friday night at the L.C. Walker Arena with a 6:15 p.m. puck drop. Courtside will be hosting a Watch Party for Fighting Saints fans to view the game. Game 4 is Saturday at 6:15 p.m. Both contests will air on Dubuque Super Hits 106.1 FM with Zack Fisch having the call.
