Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA - The Dubuque Fighting Saints have announced Evan Dixon as the seventh head coach in the organization's Tier-I history.
After joining the Fighting Saints' coaching staff in 2019 as an assistant coach, Dixon has remained on the Saints staff through three different head coaching tenures. Prior to the 2022-23 season under Kirk MacDonald, Dixon was elevated to the team's associate head coach.
"I've had the privilege of working with some great coaches in my time in Dubuque. Oliver David, Greg Brown, and Kirk MacDonald have all played an tremendous part in my development as a leader and I cannot thank them enough for their guidance and mentorship," said Dixon. "I feel honored and excited to take on this new experience. I look forward to continuing to make a positive impact on our players, staff and the Dubuque community."
In his time on the coaching staff, Dixon has specialized in many areas, helping the Saints to playoff berths in all five of his seasons on staff. In 2023-24, Dixon championed the Fighting Saints' league-best power play unit at 31.5% over the course of the season.
"First and foremost, Evan is a great person that genuinely cares more about others than himself," said General Manager Trevor Edwards. "His skill set is extremely diverse with a unique ability to coach the game at a high technical level, hold players accountable to high standards, while also building excellent relationships with our players and staff."
"He is extremely organized and detailed in his approach which has played a big part in our club's consistency on and off the ice," continued Edwards. "During his time in Dubuque he has taken full advantage of the opportunities to learn from coaches Oliver David, Greg Brown, and Kirk MacDonald and has earned the opportunity to be the next Head Coach of the Dubuque Fighting Saints."
For the past two seasons, Dixon has been selected to serve on Team USA's coaching staff as an assistant at the World Jr. A Challenge. With Dixon on staff, the teams earned a medal in both tournaments, taking home gold in 2022 and bronze in 2023.
Former president of hockey operations and general manager Kalle Larsson also spoke highly of his time shared with Dixon in Dubuque. "Evan has been instrumental in every aspect of the Fighting Saints. He is diligent and hardworking, but what stands out the most is his genuine care for our players and organization. Regardless if what tasks he has been handed - and it's been a lot - he has always gone above and beyond to over-deliver."
"He has grown tremendously as a coach, and he is more than ready for this challenge," continued Larsson. "The Saints are in great hands with Evan and Trevor leading the way in the coming years."
With his promotion, Dixon takes over as a head coach for the first time in his coaching career. He began his coaching career in 2017 as an assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point.
"Typically every coach has their critics for whatever reasons, right or wrong, it's amazing, but I'm not sure there is one player, parent or person in the hockey world that isn't complementary of Evan's professionalism, character and coaching abilities," stated Managing Partner Brad Kwong. "As an Assistant Coach Evan made the Fighting Saints organization infinitely better. We are very fortunate to be able to elevate him to Head Coach today so that he can lead our organization in the future."
Dixon has been with the Saints since he left Stevens Point in 2019 and will continue to serve Dubuque as a head coach for the first time.
"I want to thank Brad Kwong, Trevor Edwards, and Kalle Larsson for their loyalty and belief in me as a person and coach," concluded Dixon. "I am so grateful to have the opportunity to step into this role with the Dubuque Fighting Saints."
