Grand Rapids Drive News Release
NEWARK, DE - The Grand Rapids Drive (23-20) came back from a double-digit second-half deficit to defeat the Delaware 87ers (13-31) on the road Tuesday night by a 121-112 final. Delaware had a 12-point lead entering the fourth quarter and led by as many as 17 points, but the Drive outscored them 38-17 in the fourth quarter to snap a two-game skid.
Former Philadelphia 76er KJ McDaniels led the Drive in scoring for the third consecutive game as a reserve, picking up 22 points and eight rebounds. Three other Drive players had 20 points, as starting frontcourt Derek Willis and Landry Nnoko had 20 points and 11 rebounds each and Kay Felder just missed a double-double himself with 20 points and nine assists, scoring eight of his points in the fourth quarter. McDaniels also led all players in plus-minus as the Drive outscored their opponents by 18 points in 29 minutes with him on the court.
Christian Wood's 20 points and 17 rebounds were both team highs for the 87ers, Demetrius Jackson scored 17 points and added five rebounds and five assists, and Shawn Long had 16 points. Long dealt with some foul trouble, but Delaware outscored the Drive by nine points in his 26 minutes despite ultimately losing by nearly double figures.
The Sevens' issues with turnovers were a big factor in their inability to hang onto the lead, as they had 20 in the game compared to 11 by the Drive. Grand Rapids also had good ball movement the whole night coupled with the low turnover numbers, registering 26 assists as a team, including 10 by bench player Speedy Smith. The Sevens shot a solid 37 percent from three-point range on 38 attempts, but the Drive were ultimately able to match that efficiency from the field overall, connecting on exactly half their shots from the field.
The Drive are off until Saturday, when they will play the Swarm in Greensboro. The Sevens' next game is also on the road, Friday against the Fort Wayne Mad Ants.
