Grand Rapids Drive News Release
MISSISSAUGA, ON - The Grand Rapids Drive (17-13) had to wake up early on Wednesday morning as the 905 (12-18) jumped out to a 14-0 lead within the first three minutes and led by as many as 17 in the 1st quarter. Grand Rapids relied on their tough team defense to claw back into the game and found themselves tied up at 42 all midway through the 2nd quarter. But a 14-6 run by the 905 to end the half had the home team up 8 heading into the locker room at the half. A strong 3rd quarter by Grand Rapids had the 905 leading by just one and the Drive took their first lead of the game with just over six minutes to go in the 4th after a Louis King layup. But the 905 were able to convert on crucial possessions down the stretch to grab the 116-110 victory in front of 2,000 fans.
Fans certainly could have mixed up the teams based on name recognition with a quick glance at the box score. Stanley Johnson and Henry Ellenson, both recent first round draft picks by the Detroit Pistons, suited up for 905 along with Michael Bethea Jr. who was with Grand Rapids last season. Johnson, on assignment from Toronto, had a huge game for the 905, finishing with a strong 26 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals. Bethea Jr. went for 9 points with his new club and Ellenson wasn't focused on scoring to help his team grab the victory, ending with 8 rebounds, 8 assists, 3 blocks and 2 points.
Both of 905's two-way players also had big games in today's win, as Paul Watson finished with 26 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals and Oshae Brissett ended with 19 points and 7 rebounds. Devin Robinson was the other 905 player in double figures with 12 points.
For Grand Rapids, it was a trio King, Hall and Bone that sparked the comeback effort throughout the game. Two-way player Louis King, back from a stint with Detroit, finished with an impressive 21 points, 15 rebounds and 4 blocks. Big man Donta Hall secured another double-double on his season with 22 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocks and the other Pistons two-way player, Jordan Bone, had a strong 22 points & 6 assists. Todd Withers was the other Drive player to end in double figures, going for 14 points and 6 rebounds.
The 905 will remain in Mississauga and will welcome the Herd to town on February 1st at 2pm. The Drive will return home following their four-game road trip to get ready to host Capital City on February 5th at 7pm at DeltaPlex Arena.
