Drillers training camp report

February 24, 2005 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL) - Beaumont Drillers News Release

BEAUMONT, TX –The Beaumont Drillers were forced to open training camp 2005 inside a basketball gym due to inclement weather, but all were happy to get things underway including head coach Kyle Mackey.

“The weather was uncooperative, but it was nice to get that first workout under our belt,” said Mackey. “Guys were working hard. We got a lot accomplished.”

The offensive side of the ball was able to work on basic formations and quick passes stated Mackey. “Of out veterans, Kasey Nonette (quarterback) did a good job. He looked very comfortable.” Of the training camp invitees, Mike Mooney and Richard Edwards, both receivers, impressed Mackey.

First year defensive coordinator Troy Esprit also was able to evaluate his players. “We had a chance to go over some basic things and do some foot work drills. Esprit was encouraged by the play of newcomers Shawn Manning (defensive back) and Phillip Mouzon (defensive line).

“It was great to see guys working hard,” said veteran receiver Pat Palmer who spent time with the Washington Redskins. “Mackey is doing things the right way – not just laying back. He’s getting involved and got things organized.”

The Drillers will continue training camp, Thursday Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. at the Sterling Pruitt Activities Center in Beaumont.
