Tulsa Drillers News Release
The San Antonio Missions entered Wednesday night's game against the Tulsa Drillers with the second-best team ERA in the Texas League. But in Wednesday's game, the Drillers pounded out 14 hits against 3 different San Antonio pitchers and posted an 8-5 win in the finale of a 3-game series at Wolff Stadium.
After the Missions took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Drillers scored four times in the third to take the lead. With one out in the third, Tony Miller and Doug Bernier produced consecutive singles. After Jeff Salazar was retired, Gustavo Escobar put the Drillers on the board with a single that scored Miller, and Ryan Spilborghs gave Tulsa its first lead with a base-hit to right field to bring Bernier home. Sean Barker followed with another single to left. Leftfielder Jon Nelson's throw to the plate to try to get Escobar eluded catcher Brian Moon, allowing Spilborghs to also cross the plate and to give the Drillers a 4-1 lead.
The Missions trimmed the lead with a run in the bottom of the third, but the Drillers answered with a run in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Miller singled and stole second base and scored on a double from Bernier.
Tulsa expanded its lead in the fifth. Three straight singles from Escobar, Spilborghs and Barker increased the Drillers lead to 6-2, and a 2-run double by Corey Slavik made the score 8-2.
Four Tulsa pitchers made sure the lead held. Drillers starting pitcher Scott Randall worked 6 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and three runs, but only one of the runs was earned. He walked three hitters and struck out five.
Chris Young surrendered two runs in 2/3 of an inning and was relieved by Yusuke Arakawa who got the last two outs in the 8th inning and the first out in the 9th. With two runners on and the tying run at the plate, P.J. Bevis replaced Arakawa and got the final two outs of the game. It was the seventh save of the year for Bevis and his second in as many nights.
Spilborghs and Bernier had three hits each to pace the Drillers' attack. Slavik and Barker each had two hits to go with two runs batted in apiece.
The win keeps the Drillers 2 ½ games in front of Arkansas in the East Division standings. The Travelers were 10-3 winners over Frisco on Wednesday.
Tulsa will now return home to begin an 8-game homestand Thursday night at Drillers Stadium. In game one of a four-game series against the Corpus Christi Hooks on Thursday, Zack Parker (5-2, 4.24 ERA) will take the mound for Tulsa against Mark McLemore (4-3, 2.76 ERA) for the Hooks. Game time will be 7:05PM.
