Springfield Cardinals News Release
Tulsa, OK - The Tulsa Drillers walked off with a two-run home run from LF Kyle Garlick in the bottom of the 10th, topping the 1st-Half North Division Champion Springfield Cardinals, 8-6, before 3,636 fans at ONEOK Field on Wednesday night.
The Drillers (2-0, 39-32) swung in front in the bottom of the first against All-Star RHP Daniel Poncedeleon. With one away and the bases empty after a walk and a caught-stealing by C Carson Kelly, 3B Brandon Trinkwon doubled himself aboard. 2B Willie Calhoun followed with an RBI single to right field, scoring Trinkwon for the 1-0 Tulsa lead.
The Cardinals (0-2, 41-31), though, tied it right away in the top of the second against RHP Scott Barlow. The inning began with three straight singles from RF Anthony Garcia, 3B Paul DeJong and C Carson Kelly, loading the bases with no outs. 1B Michael Ohlman then came through with the game-tying RBI sacrifice fly to right field, bringing in Garcia for the 1-1 tie.
After a scoreless bottom of the second from Poncedeleon, the Cardinals charged in front in the top of the third. CF Harrison Bader reached on a fielding error charged to SS Drew Maggi to start the stanza. SS Bruce Caldwell followed with a base hit, before a walk from LF Luke Voit loaded the bases with no outs for the second straight inning. Garcia then drilled a two-run single to left field, plating Bader and Caldwell to lift the Cardinals into the 3-1 lead.
Springfield kept swinging in the top of the fourth, adding a run with two outs in the inning. Poncedeleon helped his own cause with his first-career base hit, a grounder up the middle that extended the inning with two away. Bader then unloaded an RBI triple into the right field corner, bringing in Poncedeleon all the way from first base and making it a 4-1 Springfield advantage.
The Cardinals added a fifth run on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth, before Tulsa put together a three-run rally to pull within one in the bottom of the fifth. Pinch-hitting OF Adam Law led off with a single, before a walk from RF Andrew Toles put two runners on. Both then came racing home on a two-run triple by Trinkwon. After a walk and a pop out, 1B Cody Bellinger brought in Trinkwon with an RBI groundout, making it just a one run Tulsa deficit, 5-4.
The Cardinals got one of the runs right back in the top of the sixth inning. With one down, Bader launched his second triple of the game and fourth of the season, pelting it off the center field wall to swing himself all the way to third base. Caldwell then brought Bader home with an RBI sacrifice fly to left, padding the lead back to two runs, 6-4.
Tulsa, though, completed the comeback with two tallies in the bottom of the sixth against RHP Pedro Echemendia. A single from C Paul Hoenecke and a groundrule double by Maggi started the stanza with runners at second and third. Relief pitcher and former Major League outfielder, RHP Jordan Schafer, skied an RBI sacrifice fly to bring in Hoenecke, before Toles tied it at 6-6 with an RBI single to plate Maggi.
Echemendia started the seventh and gave way to LHP Justin Wright with one on and one down. Wright, making his first appearance after starting the season with AAA-Memphis, quickly induced an inning-ending double play to close the seventh with the 6-6 tie intact.
RHP Ronnie Shaban (L, 4-1) then kept the tie intact through his first two scoreless innings, dealing a 1-2-3 eighth and working around a single and an intentional walk in the ninth.
Tulsa RHP Caleb Dirks (W, 3-2) navigated through a scoreless top of the 10th, before the Drillers struck in the bottom of the 10th. Facing Shaban, pinch-hitting 1B Lars Anderson started the inning with a single, but Shaban quickly induced a 4-6-3 double play to clear the bases with two down. Maggi, however, put in a 10-pitch at-bat then resulted in a bloop single to right field, extending the inning with two away. LF Kyle Garlick then took advantage of the opportunity, driving a walk-off, two-run home run to left-center field to propel the Drillers to the 8-6 win in 10 innings.
