Drillers ready for first place Houma this Saturday in Beaumont
Beaumont, TX--Winners of three (3) consecutive games, the Beaumont Drillers (4-2) will welcome the Atlantic South's first place Houma Bayou Bucks (5-1) this Saturday at the "Oil Palace" a.k.a. the Beaumont Civic Center at 7:30 p.m.
The Drillers are fresh off a come-from-behind 22 point win on the road at Waco, winning 44-42 on a 30-yard field goal in the final 0:08 seconds of the game from newly acquired kicker Darren Brown.
The Houma Bayou Bucks tallied 84 on then-first place Tupelo at home last weekend winning 84-55. Atlantic South's Offensive Player of the Week, QB Doug Coleman was 18-26, 211 yards with 6 TDs and 2 INTs. But, the banged-up Buck defense also allowed Tupelo to post 317 yards of offense on them. The Drillers defeated the same Tupelo in Beaumont, 61-21 back on April 10.
LAST MEETING: April 3, 2004 at HOUMA
The Bayou Bucks defeated Beaumont 52-43. The Drillers lost starting QB Ted Robison in the first half, and back-up running back Rolland Hayes filled in nicely. The Drillers had two (2) leads in the second half (35-31 and 43-38) but could not keep them. RB Troy Sumrall had a field day rushing for 125 yards and 5 TDs. Houma's QB, Coleman, was 11 of 20 for 137 yards and 5 TDs with 2 picks. Drillers QB Marc Saldana did not make the trip.
Houma is 6th in the NIFL in scoring, averaging 49.2 points per game. WR Kevin Heard is 3rd in the NIFL in receiving yards with 412 and tied for 5th in the league for total points scoring, 84. QB Doug Coleman has a rating of 101.98, throwing for 856 yards on 70 of 122 attempts with 25 TDs and only 3 INTs, two stemming from BEAUMONT. RB Jarvis Dunn has 313 yards on the ground, averaging 6 per carry and 62.6 per game. Houma is 2-1 on the road, averaging 51.6 points while giving up 47.
Head coach Bryan Blake has named Marc Saldana starting QB, and RB Troy Sumrall will see his first action since getting injured on April 10 against Tupelo. Saldana is 3-0 as the Drillers starter this season, and has a rating of 101.96, going 39 for 68 for 376 yards with 7 TDs and 3 INTs. WR Chad Luttrull leads the receivers with 29 catches for 305 yards, and also averages 20.3 yards on kick returns. The Drillers "d" is 5th overall in the NIFL allowing only 150.3 yards per game. The Drillers Red-Zone defense is ranked 4th allowing teams to score only 57.6 percent of the time (19 of 33 attempts). Eric Winchester leads the team in tackles with 30 followed by Nick Mitchell, with 29.5. Beaumont is undefeated at home (2-0) while averaging 66.5 and giving up 36.5 in those two games.
