Tulsa Drillers News Release
July 11, 2008 - The Tulsa Drillers won a season high fifth straight game Friday night thanks to a 12-0 blanking of the Arkansas Travelers at Dickey-Stephens Park. The win improved the Drillers second-half record to 13-6 and increased their first-place lead to 3.5 games over the Springfield Cardinals in the North Division standings of the Texas League.
Pitcher Chaz Roe was the benefactor of the 12 runs, but he could have won with much less. Roe worked all nine innings to record the first nine-inning complete game for a Tulsa hurler this season. He allowed only three singles and one walk and registered seven strikeouts in improving his Texas League record to a perfect 3-0.
Coming off a homestand that featured several late-inning comebacks, the Drillers have not needed those heroics in North Little Rock. In the first two games of a four-game series, Tulsa has never trailed in going 2-0.
In Friday's victory, the Drillers jumped to a big, early lead with four runs in the top of the first inning. Matt Miller doubled home the first two runs, and Jeff Kindel made it 3-0 with another double. Jeff Dragicevich completed the big inning with an RBI single.
Tulsa added two more runs in the second on only one hit, thanks to an error and a wild pitch.
It stayed 6-0 until Kindel led off the fifth with his seventh home run of the season.
In the eighth, Brian Esposito singled and scored on a base hit by Dexter Fowler. A sacrifice fly by Miller that plated Corey Wimberly, who had singled, upped the margin to 9-0.
A three-run homer by Esposito, his third of the year, completed the game's scoring.
Wimberly and Dragicevich collected three hits each to pace a 13-hit Tulsa attack. Miller picked up three runs batted in to increase his Texas League leading total to 74.
Eric Young Jr. was hitless in two at-bats before leaving the game with an injury. The second baseman split a finger nail sliding into home in the second inning.
The Drillers will try to extend their winning streak to six straight games Saturday night in North Little Rock. Alan Johnson (3-7, 4.84 ERA) will pitch for Tulsa against Robert Mosebach (7-7, 4.96 ERA) of Arkansas. Starting time is scheduled for 7:10PM.
