Drillers Even Series Behind Four Homers

Big nights at the plate by catcher Kyle Farmer and shortstop Erisbel Arruebarrena helped Tulsa even its series against San Antonio with a 10-1 rout Monday night at Wolff Stadium.

Early on Monday things looked promising as the Missions continued a familiar theme by scoring an early run. Sunday's star on the bases, Nelson Ward, once against played table setter. San Antonio's leadoff man greeted starter Seth Frankoff with a single up the middle. Ward promptly stole second, his fourth swipe in the last two days. Later in the frame, Ward moved to third when Frankoff's pickoff attempt at second sailed high and into center. Auston Bousfield knocked Ward home with a sacrifice fly to right.

Tulsa responded in the top of the third against starter Johnny Hellweg, tying the game at one on a Devan Ahart sacrifice fly. The Drillers got to Hellweg (0-1) again in both the fourth and fifth innings courtesy of leadoff homers by Farmer and Arruebarrena.

In the top of the seventh, Tulsa broke the game open against southpaw Kyle Bartsch with a five-run outburst that made the score 8-1. Farmer capped the rally with a three-run dinger onto the berm in left.

An inning later, Arruebarrena pushed the lead to eight with his second homer of the game, a solo shot to left off reliever Ramon Benjamin. It was Arruebarrena's second two-homer game of his career and for Farmer, his first. The two sluggers combined to finish 6-for-9 with a triple, six RBI and five runs scored.

Tulsa tacked on one more in the ninth against reliever Rafael De Paula. The Drillers racked up 17 hits in the victory.

Grant Dayton (1-0) earned the win for Tulsa with two scoreless innings of relief.

San Antonio (2-3) wraps up its season-opening homestand Tuesday at 7:05 PM with the series finale against Tulsa (2-3). Fabio Castillo (0-1, 4.50) will get the ball for the Missions, while the Drillers counter with fellow righty Chase De Jong (0-1, 1.50). It will be an AARP $2 Tuesday with outfield reserved seats, parking, Nicha's tacos, Kiolbassa sausage wraps and domestic draft beer all for just $2.

Notes: San Diego announced several moves today, affecting the Missions roster. INF Duanel Jones was released and to fill the void, INF Mike Olt was transferred from Triple-A El Paso. Olt, like Hellweg, had a big 2012 season in the Texas League. In 95 games for Frisco that season, the former UCONN star batted .288 (102-for-354) with 17 doubles, one triple, 28 homers, 82 RBI and 65 runs scored. Olt has had big league service time with three different clubs: Texas, Chicago (NL) and Chicago (AL). He struck out in his only at-bat Monday.
