Drillers Pound Missions Behind Farmer & Arruebarrena
April 11, 2016 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release
The Tulsa Drillers early season offensive struggles disappeared Monday night in a big 10-1 victory in San Antonio as Kyle Farmer and Erisbel Arruebarrena each homered twice. The nine runs were a season high for the Drillers, who had scored a total of only two runs in their first four games of the season. Tulsa also produced a season best 17 hits in the win.
The victory improved the Drillers record to 2-3 on the young season with one game remaining in the season-opening road trip.
The big offensive output erased an early deficit as the Missions got their lone run in the bottom of the first inning off Tulsa starting pitcher Seth Frankoff.
The Drillers scored in three straight innings to take the lead. The first run came in the top of the third as Brandon Trinkwon and Frankoff had consecutive one-out hits. Trinkwon came home with the tying run on a sacrifice fly from Devan Ahart.
Farmer put the Tulsa in front with his first homer of the night leading off the fourth inning.
Erisbel Arruebarrena duplicated Farmer when he led off the next inning with his first home run of the year to make it 3-1.
The Drillers put the game away with a five-run seventh. Yadir Drake and Arruebarrena opened the inning with back-to-back singles. A sacrifice fly from Trinkwon brought Drake home before a two-out single from Ahart plated Arruebarrana to increase the lead to 5-1.
After Willie Calhoun singled to keep the inning going, Farmer struck again with a drive that curved around the left field foul pole. The three-run homer made it 8-1. Farmer, who is rated as one of the Los Angeles Dodgers' top prospects by MLB.com, entered this season with only nine career homers in three minor league seasons.
Arruebarrena capped his and the Drillers big night with his second home run, a solo shot in the top of the eighth.
In addition to his two homers, Farmer also added a triple to finish 3-5 with three runs batted in. Arruebarrena also finished with three hits.
Every Drillers starter, including Frankoff, had at least one hit in the contest.
Tulsa pitchers continued their good early-season form. Frankoff departed after three innings, and a trio of three relievers combined to blank the Missions over the final six innings.
Newcomer Grant Dayton, who had just arrived in San Antonio a couple of hours before game time, was credited with the win.
The Drillers will wrap up their season-opening road trip Tuesday night in San Antonio. Opening night starter Chase De Jong (0-1, 1.50 ERA) will take the mound for Tulsa against Fabio Castillo (0-1, 4.50 ERA). The finale will begin at 7:05PM at Nelson Wolff Stadium.
