Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Daniel Pigott hit home run and three Dayton pitchers combined to scatter six hits as the Dragons defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Field.
The Dragons improved to 31-25 in the second half with the win. They are one game out of the wildcard spot pending the completion of Sunday afternoon's Great Lakes-Fort Wayne game. The Dragons are two games out of first place.
The Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Pigott lined a home run to left field. It was his third homer of the year.
Dayton tacked on three more runs in the fifth. Sammy Diaz started the rally with a single to right field and went to second on a hit to left by Jeff Gelalich. Seth Mejias-Brean singled to right to drive in Diaz and make it 2-0 as Gelalich went to third. Daniel Pigott hit a bouncer to second base that Harold Castro fielded and threw home to try to get Gelalich, but his throw was wild and went to the backstop as the run scored. One batter later, Zach Vincej singled to left to drive in Mejias-Brean and make it 4-0.
West Michigan's Lance Durham belted a solo home run in the seventh to get the Whitecaps on the scoreboard. It was Durham's 13th homer of the year. In the eighth, Connor Harrell delivered a run-scoring single to make it 4-2. Dragons closer Alejandro Chacin entered the game with two men in scoring position and two outs. He issued a walk to load the bases before getting Durham to ground out to second to end the threat and strand three.
Chacin issued a lead-off walk in the ninth but retired the next three batters to notch his seventh save.
Dragons starting pitcher Sal Romano (7-9) worked five and two-thirds innings and allowed two hits and no runs with four walks and three strikeouts to earn the win. Wandy Peralta replaced Romano and worked two innings, allowing two runs on four hits with a walk.
The Dragons collected 11 hits. Diaz and Vincej each had three while Mejias-Brean picked up two to raise his batting average to .305.
The Dragons host the Whitecaps on Monday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field in the third game of the four-game series. Ismael Guillon (5-7, 5.40) will start for Dayton against West Michigan's Edgar De La Rosa (6-6, 6.15). The series will conclude on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at daytondragons.com and wone.com.
