Dragons poised to break return record
May 6, 2005 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
New York Dragons News Release
The New York Dragons have been a fierce squad returning kicks in the 2005 season. They enter their Week Fifteen tilt with the Columbus Destroyers one touchdown shy of breaking the record for most combined kick returns (kickoff and missed field goals) for scores. They're currently tied with the 2000 Milwaukee Mustangs with ten.
"I believe we have a great stable of kick returners and two very talented special teams' coaches in Jerome Brown and Chad Lindsey who come up with the blocking schemes," said Dragons head coach Weylan Harding.
Last week in Dallas, WR/DBs DaShane Dennis and Will Holder each returned kickoffs for scores. Holder's 57-yard return in the second quarter tied Milwaukee's record of ten. For the season, Holder is tied for the league in combined return touchdowns with San Jose's Rashid Davis. Each player has four. WR/DB Corey Johnson is tied for second in the league with three. Dennis has returned two for scores while OS Markeith Cooper has one.
MOST COMBINED RETURN TOUCHDOWNS IN ONE SEASON:
Team Season Return TDs
Milwaukee 2000 10
New York 2005 10
Carolina 2001 9
The Dragons return home this week to host the Columbus Destroyers. With a win, the Dragons would sweep the Eastern Division with a 6-0 record. Tickets are still available and interested parties should call a Dragons ticket representative at 1-866-AFL-TIXX or visit www.newyorkdragons.com for more details.
