Glens Falls Dragons News Release

GLENS FALLS, N.Y.-Many PGCBL baseball fans would say that the Glens Falls Dragons (14-11) and Saugerties Stallions (9-13) have developed a bit of a heated rivalry during the first half of the season. Thursday's night's game at East Field did nothing to dispel that statement. The Dragons blew open a back and forth game with a three run eighth to take a hard fought 8-4 victory over the Stallions.

Saugerties jumped out in front in the top of the second against Glens Falls starter Matthew Sturchio (Triton). The Stallions got back to back singles from John Giakas (Fairleigh Dickinson) and Dylan Jenkins (Susquehanna). Micah Riddick (SUNY Ulster) then picked up the RBI on a ground out to make it 1-0.

The Dragons answered back against Saugerties starter Nick Williams (Union) with two outs in the bottom of the second when Ryan Hooper (UC-Davis) smacked a homerun, his first of the season, to knot the game up at 1-1. Williams then hit back to back batters, drawing a warning from the home plate umpire, before coming up with a big strikeout to get out of the jam.

Glens Falls took the lead for the first time on the evening in the bottom of the third. Danny Oliveri (Triton) led off the inning with a walk. Mark Powell (Bucknell) reached on an error and Oscar Rodriguez (St. Thomas) nailed an RBI single to left field to make it 2-1 Dragons. Saugerties quickly tied it back up in the fourth as Giakis and Jenkins struck again, this time with back to back doubles, to make it 2-2. Clint Hardy (Augusta State) added a two RBI single to give the Stallions the 4-2 edge.

The Dragons tied the game back up in the bottom of the sixth. Pinch-hitter Jake Vieth (Tacoma CC) and Rich Guglielmi (Saginaw Valley State) drew back to back one out walks. Oliveri reached on a field choice and stole second putting runners at second and third. Powell then sliced a two run single down the left field line to drive in Vieth and Oliveri to tie it at 4-4.

Glens Falls regained the lead 5-4 in the bottom of the second as after Brennan Price (Felician) singled, pinch runner David Sarmiento came around to score on a perfectly executed hit and run with Hooper picking up his second RBI of the game.

Glens Falls increased their lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the eighth without the benefit of a hit as Saugerties pitchers walked four batters and hit another. Tyler Phillips (Herkimer CC) added a sacrifice fly to make it 8-4.

Cameron Churchill (Nova Southeastern) 3-2, earned the win in relief for Glens Falls. Churchill entered in the fifth and went the rest of the way, yielding just one hit, while striking out five and walking none.

Glens Falls and Saugerties will go at it at East Field again on Sunday. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
