Dragons Mascots, Green Team Performing at 100 Elementary Schools
February 18, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Opening night for the 2013 baseball season is seven weeks away, but Dayton Dragons mascots Heater and Gem along with the Dragons Green Team are already in mid-season form. For the first time in the organization's 14-year history, the Dragons entertainment team is performing assemblies at approximately 100 Miami Valley elementary schools throughout the month of February.
Each 30-minute interactive, fun, high-energy performance includes a visit by Heater or Gem and members of the Green Team, the Dragons signature group that facilitates skits, contests, and sing-a-longs during Dragons games at Fifth Third Field. The performances, typically held in the school gymnasium, include some of the same entertainment skits seen at the ballpark, plus some new material designed specifically for the schools. All Dragons assemblies are performed free of charge for schools that sign up. Participating elementary schools on board so far stretch from Springboro to Sidney.
The assemblies provide an introduction to the Dayton Dragons School Program, an incentive-based school fundraiser that provides prizes to students and allows the schools to keep a portion of ticket sales to Dragons games.
"Over 10,000 students, school staff, and families attend Dragons games every season as part of our school program," said Robert Murphy, Dragons President. "These assemblies take the fun and experiences of Dragons baseball inside the schools to the students."
The Dragons are providing prizes as part of the program including team merchandise, free memberships to the Frisch's Dragons Kids Club, an invitation to a Donatos Pizza Party with Dragons players, and the grand prize, a trip to a Cincinnati Reds game with a chance to meet a former Dragons player now playing for the Reds. Additionally, the school that sells the most tickets will receive a $1,000 bonus.
The Dragons open their 14th season in the Midwest League on April 4 at West Michigan with opening night at Fifth Third Field set for April 11.
