Keene Swamp Bats News Release
KEENE - Tommy Doyle (Virginia) flirted with a no-hitter tonight and Parker Sniatynski (St. Louis) hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th inning as the SwampBats (11-5) defeated the Newport Gulls (7-10) 2-1.
Whenever Keene and Newport get together there always seems to a little extra buzz surrounding the game.
Tonight's game lived up to the buzz.
There's no other way to describes tonight's game other than a pitcher's duel. Doyle for Keene and Jake Cousins (Pennsylvania) for Newport put on a show for the 1,001 on hand at Alumni Field.
On any other night, Cousin's 7 inning outing, where he gave up just 1 earned run on 4 hits and struck out 4 batters, would have been the highlight of the game, but Doyle's performance overshadowed all.
Doyle was no-hitting the Gulls through 7 2/3 innings when Cole Fabio (Bryant) knocked an RBI- single through the right side of the infield to break up the bid. Perfect through 4 innings, Doyle was getting ahead in the count and then getting the Gulls to either miss or make weak contact with balls outside the strike zone late in the at bat. A 5th inning walk and a pair of errors from Jordan Howard kept the no-no in tack but Doyle ran out of gas in the 7th, tossing a SwampBats season high 101 pitches.
His final line on the night was 7 2/3 innings, 1 earned run one 1 hit, 9 strikeouts to 2 walks, and 28 batters faced.
Not much offense from either side in this one. Dom Iero (Kent St.) hit his first home run of the season in the 6th inning for the only run the SwampBats would get against Cousins. Fabio's RBI-single tied the game in the 7th and that would be all the offense from the Gulls.
Carmen Giampetruzzi (Boston Col.) and Ivon Clough (Southern New Hampshire) came in relief of Doyle and tossed a combined perfect 3 1/3 innings.
To extra's both teams went and there was not much action until the bottom of the 11th inning. Iero lead things off with a walk and a Brandt Stallings (Georgia Tech) double moved them both into scoring position. Newport elected to intentionally walk Ryan Costello (Central Connecticut St.) to load the bases and bring Sniatynski to the plate.
The count was even at 1 ball and 1 strike, when the next offering from Denny Brady (East Carolina) was high and inside, probably a pitch Sniatynski would tell you he should not have made such an effort to get out of the way of. Stepping back into the box with cheers from the crowd behind him, Sniatynski ripped the 2-1 pitch up the middle to bring Dom Iero home for the game winning run.
This was the 'Bats third consecutive win and their fourth win in their last five games.
The SwampBats look to make four in a row tomorrow when the travel to Montpelier, VT for the first time this season to take on the Vermont Mountaineers (4-12).
The game can be heard live on the NECBL Broadcast Network and FM 104.1 and AM 1220 ESPN Keene.
