Down to Their Final Out, Saints Come Back and Win 4-3

WINNIPEG, MB (July 15, 2014) - The St. Paul Saints hadn't scored a run all night long. In the continuation of a postponed game from June 14, they didn't put up a run in their six turns at bat on Tuesday night. In the second game, a scheduled seven inning contest, the Saints had failed to score in 6.2 innings. That's when the bats finally woke up. Down to their final out with one on and trailing 3-0, the Saints scored four runs and came from behind for a 4-3 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Shaw Park.

With the Saints down 3-0 in the seventh Joe Bonfe led off with a single. He finished the game 3-3. Two outs later it looked bleak. Jared McDonald, however, doubled to left-center to knock home Bonfe and make it 3-1. Dwight Childs laced a double down the right field line that scored McDonald to make it 3-2. Devin Thaut followed with an RBI single to left-center that tied the game at three. Sam Maus reached on an infield single to short putting runners at first and second. Evan Bigley finished the come back off with a single up the middle that scored Thaut to give the Saints a one run lead.

All-Star closer Dan Sattler finished it off in the bottom of the seventh. With one out he walked Sam Kimmel. With two outs and the count 2-2 on Josh Mazzola, Kimmel took off from first, but Sattler froze Mazzola with a slider to strike him out and end the game.

The Goldeyes scored all three of their runs in the third inning off of Saints starter Nick Barnese. Kimmel led off with a walk. Kuhn singled to right and Bigley had the ball go under his glove allowing Kimmel to score and sending Kuhn to third giving the Goldeyes a 1-0 lead. Mazzola knocked home Kuhn with a single to make it 2-0. A balk moved Mazzola to second and he went to third on a groundout by Brock Bond. Luis Alen singled to center scoring Mazzola giving the Goldeyes a 3-0 lead.

It looked like it would hold up as Goldeyes starter Matt Jackson was stellar for 6.0 innings. He didn't allow a run on five hits and struck out a season high 10. The bullpen, however, could not hold it and the Saints had their 11th comeback victory this season and have now won six straight one run games.

The same two teams will meet in a doubleheader on Wednesday evening at Shaw Park. Game one will begin at 5:00 p.m. with game two starting approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of game one. Both games are scheduled for seven innings. The Saints will send RHP Drew Gay (2-0, 2.53) to the mound in game one against Goldeyes LHP Nick Hernandez (5-1, 3.69). In game two the Saints send RHP Jeff Shields (4-3, 3.30) to the mound while the Goldeyes are TBA. Both games can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
