Lansing Lugnuts News Release
PEORIA, Ill. - The Lansing Lugnuts (16-16, 48-53) pulled out a late win for the second straight night, defeating the Peoria Chiefs (17-15, 54-47), 3-2, on Thursday night at Dozer Park.
After being held off of the scoreboard for the first eight frames, Lansing scored three runs in the ninth inning to take a late lead.
With two outs, second baseman Dickie Joe Thon drove an RBI single off of Steven Sabatino (Loss, 5-2) to score Mitch Nay and cut the deficit to 2-1.
With runners at second and third, first baseman Justin Atkinson hit a ground ball to shortstop Cesar Velera, who bounced a throw to first base, allowing both base runners to score on the error.
The Chiefs mounted a threat in the bottom of the ninth, putting runners on second and third, but reliever Phil Kish (Save, 2) struck out Vaughn Bryan to end the game.
Reliever Jimmy Cordero (Win, 3-1) gave up a hit and a walk, but stranded both runners in a scoreless eighth inning.
Right fielder Rowan Wick drove an RBI single in the first inning to give the Chiefs an early lead, and left fielder Bryan clubbed an RBI triple in the second to extend the advantage to 2-0.
Lansing starter Chase De Jong did not receive a decision after allowing two runs on five hits in four innings.
The Lugnuts loaded the bases with no outs on three successive hits in the fourth, but David Harris grounded into a fielder's choice, forcing out Derrick Loveless at home, and then Thon grounded into a double play to end the threat.
Peoria starter Chase Brookshire pitched seven scoreless innings, scattering seven hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
Making his Lansing debut, reliever Francisco Gracesqui pitched three scoreless frames, surrendering one hit and one walk with three strikeouts.
Nay and designated hitter Matt Dean each had a pair of hits for the Lugnuts.
The Lugnuts look to sweep the three-game set with the Chiefs on Friday night at 8:00 p.m. ET at Dozer Park. Right-hander Brad Allen (3-3, 4.01) starts on the mound for Lansing, countered by Peoria righty Blake McKnight (5-7, 4.15).
