Bowling Green, Ky. - The Kernels lost 2-1 at Bowling Green on Thursday night as the Hot Rods scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning. The runs held up as both teams stranded 10 runners each on base throughout the game. The teams meet in the rubber game of the series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m.

Bowling Green (14-18, 46-55) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as they sent eight men to the plate, drew three walks, and took advantage of a pair of errors by the Kernels. Juniel Querecuto began the inning with a single and later advanced to second base on a wild pitch by starter Lewis Thorpe. A two-out walk to Ty Young put runners on the corners. Querecuto scored the first run when Young stole second base and catcher Mitch Garver's throw went into center field. With the score 1-0 and Young at third base, James Harris drew a walk to again put runners on the corners. Alexander Simon hit a comebacker to pitcher Lewis Thorpe, but Thorpe's throw to Chad Christensen at first base was high. Simon was safe, and Young was able to score to extend Bowling Green's lead to 2-0. Elias Torres then drew the third walk of the inning to load the bases.

Thorpe was able to escape further danger in the first inning by getting Spencer Edwards to ground out to second as the Hot Rods left three on base. They stranded two more on base in the second inning. After back to back singles to start the frame, Thorpe recorded a groundout, foul out, and strikeout to end the threat. Thorpe (1-2) ended up going three innings in the loss, allowing the two unearned runs on four hits. He walked four and struck out three.

Cedar Rapids (17-15, 48-54) had the leadoff man on in each of the first three innings but was unable to capitalize, stranding five runners of their own on base through three innings. Engelb Vielma started the game with a single to right field, but the Kernels could not collect another hit until the sixth inning. They had a good chance to score in the third inning when they loaded the bases with two walks and a fielding error but ended up leaving the bases loaded.

The Kernels recorded their second hit of the night to lead off the sixth inning. They pushed across their only run of the game in the inning with two doubles, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Chad Christensen doubled to deep right-center to begin the inning. After a groundout and walk, Alex Swim's RBI double to left-center plated Christensen for the team's lone run. A walk followed the double as the Kernels loaded the bases with just one out. That forced Bowling Green's starter Chris Kirsch out of the game, but Brad Schreiber was able to get out of the inning when a sharp comebacker deflected off the reliever to second base, beginning an inning-ending double play.

Cedar Rapids collected two hits with two outs in the eighth inning but left both runners. They had another good chance to tie the game in the ninth inning. J.D. Williams singled to begin the inning, and Engelb Vielma drew a one-out walk to put two on. However, the game ended when Logan Wade's line drive was caught by shortstop Juneil Querecuto, who then fired to second base to double off Williams.

After Thorpe's departure, the Kernels used two pitchers to go the final five innings. Chris Mazza went three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit. He struck out four while walking none. Hudson Boyd went two scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out three and walking three.

Kirsch (6-6) picked up the win on the mound for the Hot Rods. The southpaw went 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out five and walked five. Schreiber went 2 2/3 scoreless innings while Stone Speer notched his third save in the ninth inning.

The final game of the series is on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Ryan Eades (5-11, 6.41) gets the start for the Kernels while RHP Jamie Schultz (2-0, 0.88) is scheduled to start for the Hot Rods.
