Amarillo Dillas News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Dillas fought hard against the Laredo Broncos on Friday night, but a game-saving out-at-the-plate outfield assist from Stephen Douglas gave the Dillas the edge they needed for a 7-5 win in front of 3,138 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa.
Dillas reliever Tyler Pearson (3-0) got the win in relief as he went an inning-and-two-thirds and allowed only one hit and had a strikeout. Broncos starter Matt Gibbs (3-2) got the loss, as he gave up six of the seven runs and gave up 11 hits. Amarillo closer Ramon Geronimo pitched a perfect ninth for his 12th save.
The Broncos again took an early lead as Doug Thennis hit a two-out single in the second, followed by a Carlos Arroyo double and a Ryan Flynn walk loaded the bases. DJ Dixon singled to score Thennis while Arroyo came home on a Jason Diaz walk for a 2-0 Laredo lead.
Amarillo answered to tie the game in the third as Brian Bueno singled and scored on a Jermel Lomack RBI triple. Adam De La Garza grounded out to score Lomack to tie the game 2-2.
The Dillas took the lead in the fourth as Douglas singled and scored on an Alberto Cruz RBI double. Amarillo added to the lead in the fifth as De La Garza walked with two outs, went to second on a Joaquin Rodriguez single and scored on a Carlos Figueroa RBI single, while Rodriguez scored on an Andrew Wong RBI single for a 5-2 lead.
Two Dillas errors and three Broncos hits brought home three runs, two on a Diaz double in the sixth inning to tie the game at 5-5. Laredo threatened more in the seventh as they put runners on second and third with no outs. Reliever Chris Nyman got Carlos Arroyo to line out for the first out, while Pearson came in and got Ryan Flynn to fly out to right field. Douglas made the catch for the out and threw a bullet home to get the tagging runner at the plate to end the inning with the game still tied.
Amarillo utilized the opportunity to take the lead in the bottom half of the seven. Lomack led off with a double and scored on a De La Garza RBI single to take the lead. Wong led off the eighth with a single, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Rob Recuenco RBI single for a 7-5 lead.
Geronimo stepped in for the ninth and retired all three batters he faced to preserve the win.
With the win, the Dillas improve to 31-23 while the Broncos fall to 26-29. Saturday, Amarillo will take on Laredo for the third game of a four-game set at 7:05pm with the Aqua One Pre-Game Show set to begin at 6:50pm on AudioSportsOnline via www.myamarillodillas.com.
