Auburn Doubledays News Release
The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, beat the State College Spikes, 8-4, on Saturday night. Doubledays starting pitcher Yonathan Ramirez threw five innings of one-run baseball en route to the win.
State College (23-12) scored first in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Andy Young singled. After a Ricardo Bautista fly out to left field, Danny Hudzina hit a ground rule double to left field that put runners on second and third base. Anthony Ray followed with a base hit to score Young and put the Spikes up 1-0.
Auburn (16-19) stole the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Jake Noll singled to begin the inning. Oliver Ortiz then walked. With Paul Panaccione batting, a wild pitch allowed Noll to get to third base and Ortiz to move to second. Panaccione then singled to score Noll and move Ortiz to third base, tying the game at one. After an Andres Martinez strikeout, Blake Perkins grounded out to second base. On the play, Ortiz scored and Panaccione moved to second base to give Auburn a 2-1 lead. Jack Sundberg followed with a single that scored Panaccione and put Auburn up by two, 3-1.
The Doubledays added to their lead in the sixth inning. Tres Barrera led off the inning with a single. After a Ryan Ripken strikeout, Noll doubled to put runners at second and third with one out. With Ortiz batting, a wild pitch allowed Barrera to score and Noll to advance to third base, giving Auburn a 4-1 advantage. Noll then scored on an Ortiz single to extend the Doubledays' lead to four, 5-1.
Auburn scored again in the seventh inning. Martinez led off the inning and hit a ball to right field. Bautista, the right fielder, misplayed the ball, allowing Martinez to get to third base on the play. Perkins followed with a sacrifice fly out to center field that scored Martinez and put Auburn up by five, 6-1.
The Doubledays continued to pour on the runs in the eighth inning. Ripken tripled to right-center field to start the inning. Noll then hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Ripken and put Auburn up 7-1. After Ortiz struck out, Panaccione doubled. Martinez followed with a double that scored Panaccione to extend the Auburn lead to seven, 8-1.
State College scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to cut Auburn's lead to four, 8-4. The Spikes had the bases loaded with one out, but Doubledays reliever Phil Morse struck out back-to-back batters to end the game.
The Doubledays travel to Williamsport on Sunday to begin a three-game series against the Crosscutters. Auburn won two out of three games against Williamsport in a three-game series at Falcon Park in June. First pitch on Sunday is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
