Auburn Doubledays News Release
The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost the final game of a three-game home series against the Williamsport Crosscutters, 5-0, at Falcon Park on Monday evening. Williamsport starting pitcher Adonis Medina came two outs away from a no-hitter in the game.
Williamsport put the first runs on the board in the top of the fifth inning off Auburn starting pitcher Weston Davis. With two outs in the inning, Davis walked Arquimedes Gamboa. Luke Maglich then doubled to right field. Doubledays right fielder Nick Banks made an errant throw to the infield, which allowed Gamboa to score and Maglich to advance to third base as the Crosscutters took a 1-0 lead. Gregori Rivero followed with an RBI single to right field to score Maglich and extend Williamsport's lead to two, 2-0.
The Crosscutters added a run in the sixth inning off of Doubledays right-hander Francys Peguero. David Martinelli led off the inning and took the first pitch he saw over the right-field fence to give Williamsport a 3-0 advantage.
In the seventh inning, Williamsport scored again with two outs. After back-to-back groundouts to begin the inning, Maglich walked. Rivero then hit a two-run home run to right field to put the Crosscutters on top, 5-0.
The Doubledays return to action Tuesday night with the beginning of a three-game series against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. This will be the second series between Auburn and Mahoning Valley this season with the Doubledays winning two out of three games during the first three-game set. First pitch of Tuesday's game is set for 7:05 p.m. with right-hander Carlos Acevedo on the mound for the Doubledays against Scrappers right-hander Triston McKenzie.
