ABERDEEN, MD - A three-run seventh inning for the Aberdeen IronBirds (5-6), affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, pushed the home team to a 3-2 win and clinched the series over the Connecticut Tigers (6-5). The loss is the first for Connecticut when they had scored first (5-1).
Connecticut plated the first run of the game in the third. After singles from Austin Athmann and Cesar Gonzalez, Will Savage grounded into an RBI fielder's choice to put the Tigers on the board, 1-0.
Kyle Funkhouser made the start for Connecticut and dealt three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out three.
Ryan Castellanos picked up where the Tigers starter left off. Recording three straight scoreless frames to keep the Tigers out in front heading into the seventh. In the seventh inning, Aberdeen struck for three runs, all with two outs. A RBI-single for Alejandro Juvier tied the game and Chris Shaw immediately followed with a two-run double to the left centerfield gap to plate a pair and give Aberdeen a 3-1 lead.
The Tigers threatened in the ninth, with runners at the corners and nobody out, Hunter Swilling grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, a run came across but the Tigers still trailed 3-2. Austin Athmann struck out against Andrew Eliiott to end the game.
The Tigers received strong performances from Tanner Donnels (2-4) and Sam Machonis (2-4, 2B) who both had multi-hit games for the Tigers.
Clate Schmidt made his professional debut out of the bullpen, pitching 1.1 innings of scoreless ball, allowing a hit and striking out two.
The Tigers are back in action tomorrow at Dodd Stadium against the Lowell Spinners. First pitch is slated for 7:05 pm.
