Wilson Tobs News Release
Wilson, N.C. - The players keep rolling in Tobs fans! This week we are bringing you two versatile middle infielders who fill up the state line every game, Trey Sweeney (Eastern Illinois University) and Tommy Toal (La Salle University). Between these two well-rounded ball players they have over 150 college baseball games on the infield at the D1 level, with many of them in the shortstop position. With the grit and experience these players have coach Harry Markotay should be at ease when the ball is put in play this summer.
Starting us off in the infield we have Louisville, KY native, Trey Sweeney. A 6'4 left-handed hitting shortstop. Sweeney started in 48 games at short stop as a freshman in 2019 hitting 9 doubles and 2 home runs. He continued his solid freshman campaign in the Prospect League last summer where he was an All-Star, slugging 11 doubles, 2 triples, and 7 home runs. In addition to his extra base hit capabilities, Sweeney earned 45 free passes to just 25 strike outs for an impressive .977 OPS. Sweeney picked up where he left off in his shortened spring season knocking in 13 runs in just 14 games with 3 doubles and 1 home run. He appeared in and started all 14 games this season for the Eastern Illinois Panthers. He also led the Panthers with 57 at bats, 20 hits and 13 RBIs. Sweeney also had the team-high batting average with .351. Sweeney kept the offense going by hitting three doubles, one homerun, going two for two in stolen base attempts, and even drew in eight walks. At the end of the season, Sweeney was on a 13-game hitting streak that showed no sign of slowing down.We are excited to watch Sweeney continue his offensive prowess on the 2020 Tobs team.
Our next addition to the Tobs is Springfield, PA native, Tommy Toal, a 6 ft switch hitting shortstop. In 2018 as a freshman Toal played in 35 games making 29 starts in the infield, batted .289 with a .391 on base percentage. Capping off his freshman season Toal drove in 16 runs and scored 15 times. Toal was also viewed as a wall in the infield only committing 4 errors for a stunning .956 fielding percentage. In the summer 2018 season, Toal played in the Great Lakes League for the Irish Hills Leprechauns, continuing his knack for getting on base at a high percentage of .390. In 2019 Toal started in 50 of the 51 games he played for the La Salle Explorers, all at shortstop. He batted .281 with an OBP of .423 with 43 free bases to 28 strikeouts, and 15 runs scored. Throughout Toal's collegiate career he has been asked to play multiple infield positions, which makes him a key versatile component for the 2020 Tobs. With another dangerous offensive & defensive player added to the Tobs' roster, Markotay's team will be tough to stop.
