Double Digits for Dust Devils in Win over Everett

Big two-out hits and big flies from the Tri-City Dust Devils (26-30) powered them to a 10-4 win over the Everett AquaSox (29-30) Thursday night at Funko Field.

Gabe Matthews had a huge night, going 3 for 5 with two home runs, a double and 4 RBI, and the Dust Devils had three two-out RBI hits early in the ballgame.

The first hit, a Jordyn Adams infield single that scored Christian Molfetta, gave Tri-City a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning.

Everett tied the game in the bottom of the 3rd with a solo home run, but the Dust Devils would retake the lead in a big way in the 4th, scoring six runs with two outs. With the bases loaded D'Shawn Knowles lined a two-run single to right, scoring Osmy Gregorio and Mike Peabody for a 3-1 Tri-City lead.

Kyren Paris followed with his first home run of 2022, a three-run shot to right-center field which gave the Dust Devils a 6-1 lead and chased Everett starter Jimmy Joyce (1-6). Matthews then scored Adams, who reached on an error, with a double to left center to push the lead to 7-1.

The AquaSox got a run back in the bottom of the 4th, but Robinson Piña (4-3) induced and started a double play in the 5th inning to get out of trouble and give Tri-City five solid innings. Piña struck out six, including the first four Everett hitters of the night.

The Frogs would come back again in the 6th, on Dariel Gomez's league-leading 12th home run. The two-run longball to right cut the Dust Devils lead to 7-4.

Matthews, though, would salt the game away in its later stages. The Tri-City 1B launched a high blast to center field to lead off the 7th inning, making it an 8-4 game. Matthews followed that in the 9th inning with a 2-run shot to right field, scoring Adams for the final margin.

Matthews' multiple-homer game was the second of the year for the Dust Devils in Everett. Edwin Yon also homered twice in a game, in a 9-6 win back on April 19.

Lefty Jose Salvador gets the start for Tri-City Friday night in game four of the six-game series, a 7:05 p.m. first pitch, with righty Juan Mercedes going for the AquaSox.
