'Doran the Man' named to 13th MISL All-Star Game

(St. Louis, Feb. 13, 2004) -- St. Louis Steamers forward Daryl Doran has been named to the 2004 MISL All-Star Game, Feb. 29 at 1:05 p.m. at the St. Charles Family Arena. Doran has been added as a Commissioner's Selection for the MISL USA roster. The format for the All-Star Game matches the MISL USA team against the MISL International team.

The All-Star selection is the 13th in Doran's stellar 20-year professional indoor career, which began in 1982 with the St. Louis Steamers of the original Major Indoor Soccer League. The All-Star honor comes 20 years after Doran was named to his first All-Star Game, which took place in 1984 in front of 16,312 fans at the historic St. Louis Arena.

Doran, also the Steamers' head coach, has battled through nagging injuries this season, but still ranks second on the team in points with 19 (nine goals, 10 assists). Steve Butcher, the Steamers' other MISL All-Star selection, leads the team in scoring with 21 goals and 13 assists.

A St. Louis native, Doran was a two-time Parade Magazine All-American while attending CBC High School. The Steamers originally picked Doran in the first round -- sixth overall -- of the October 1980 MISL draft. Doran graduated from CBC in 1981 and elected to play one season at Saint Louis University; he also was a member of the U.S. Under-19 Men's National Team. He again was selected in the first round by the Steamers – this time seventh overall – in the 1982 MISL draft.

Since his rookie season with the Steamers (1982-83), Doran has played for every St. Louis pro indoor franchise: the original MISL St. Louis Steamers (1982-88); the Major Soccer League St. Louis Storm (1989-92); the St. Louis Ambush of the National Professional Soccer League (1992-99); the Steamers of the World Indoor Soccer League (2000-2001); and the current Steamers of the MISL. The only season in his career that was not spent in a St. Louis uniform was 1988-89 with the MISL Los Angeles Lazers.

In 1994, Daryl added coaching duties to his playing role. The transition was unique in the sports world, with Doran being one of the few modern players to successfully produce in both roles. His St. Louis Ambush teams won five division titles and four conference championships in the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL). His 1994-95 team won the NPSL championship, and Doran was recognized as the league's coach of the year.

The Feb. 27-29 2004 MISL All-Star Weekend includes three days of activities in the St. Louis and St. Charles area. Following is a rundown of All-Star Weekend activities:

Feb. 27 – MasterCard MISL Community Day. A daylong program of visits by MISL All-Star and Legends players to hospitals, schools, and other community facilities throughout the region.

Feb. 27 – Kickin' It with the Stars. A reception hosted by the St. Louis Steamers Booster Club at the Renaissance Airport Hotel. An opportunity for fans to spend the evening with their favorite MISL All-Star Players and Legends.

Feb. 28 – MISL All-Star Family Festival, presented by the Suburban Journals and WB11. A full day of activities at The Family Arena, including the Spalding All-Star Youth Skills competition, youth mini-games, Legends practice, All-Star practice, All-Star Player Skills Challenge, and MISL "Autograph Alley."

Feb. 28 – The Commissioner's Celebration of Excellence. A gala charity fund-raiser dinner and silent auction in the Grand Concourse Ballroom of the Renaissance St. Louis Airport Hotel. Funds raised will be shared by the not-for-profit Steamer Soccer Foundation and St. Louis Variety.

Feb. 29 – 2004 MISL All-Star Game, 1:05 p.m. kickoff at The Family Arena (pregame ceremonies begin at 12:30 p.m.). The world's best professional indoor soccer players take the field in a USA vs. International format.

Feb. 29 – MISL Legends Game, 4 p.m. at The Family Arena. MISL greats from the past take the field in a Steamers Legends vs. MISL Legends competition. Steamers Legends scheduled to participate include Slobo Ilijevski, Tony Glavin, Steve Pecher, Don Ebert, Ty Keough, and many more.

The Steamers next game is Monday, Feb. 12, at 1:05 p.m. at The Family Arena as the MISL Western Division San Diego Sockers make their second visit of the season.
