Rio Grande Valley Dorados News Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 21, 2005
THE E-WATCH
Former Dorados defensive specialist Eddie Moten is the first and only player to advance his playing career from the Dorados to the higher level and is currently the youngest member of the Arena Football League âs (AFL) Philadelphia Soul. Moten, who was a rookie last season for the Dorados out of Texas A&M-Kingsville, co-led the af2 last season in interceptions with 10 and led the af2 in interception return yards with 124 yards. Each week we will keep tabs on his progress in AFL action:
Sun Feb. 20th at New Orleans VooDoo
The Philadelphia Soul dropped to 2-2 on the year with a 61-47 setback in New Orleans against the New Orleans VooDoo. Moten was third on the Soul in tackles with 4.5 tackles (4-solo,1-assisted) and had a team leading two pass break-ups. He also returned a kickoff 8 yards. The totals give Moten 14 tackles (12-solo, 4-assisted) on the year (ranks tied for 34th in the league) and his team leading 7 pass break-ups (passes defended) ranks third in the AFL, leaving him one back from co-leaders Cecil Doggette of Grand Rapids and Rashad Floyd of Colorado.
Next for Moten: The Soul will return home to host the Eastern Division leading Dallas Desperados (3-1) in an 2-PM scheduled kickoff on NBC. (NBC determines which games are televised in each of their markets and KVEO Channel 23 is tentatively scheduled to air the contest).
DORADOS RENEW RADIO AGREEMENT WITH ESPN RADIO 1240
The broadcast home for Rio Grande Valley Dorados will remain the same as it was last year during the inaugural season, as the Dorados have renewed their radio broadcast agreement with ESPN Radio 1240 AM. The radio broadcasts will be in partnership with BMP Radio, with all 16 regular season contests airing live on ESPN Radio 1240 AM (KSOX). KSOX is a 24-hour sports radio station that airs ESPN Radio programming, UTPA Basketball among various state-wide college team sports, and airs "Sportsline" with Tony Forina, which is the Valley's only local sports call-in show. The broadcasts will include a pre-game show and a brief post game show with insight from Dorados Head Coach Kevin Guy. Josh Bogorad, who serves as the play-by-play voice of the Central Hockey League's Corpus Christi Rayz, will return behind the microphone to handle the play-by-play duties for home games and Chris Due will remain providing the play-by-play action on road games.
A REVIEW OF THIS PAST WEEK'S ANNOUNCED ASSIGNMENTS
Darvel Bivens (FB/LB) 5'11 263 Lancaster, CA Northwestern St. (LA)
Bivens comes to the Dorados after spending last season with the Fayetteville, North Carolina based Cape Fear Wildcats. Despite appearing in just four games due to an injury, he still finished the season ranking second on the Wildcats squad in rushing with 65 yards off of 13 carries (5 yards per carry avg.) and registered three touchdowns. Bivens also contributed on defense with 11 tackles (4 solo) and a sack, quarterback hurry, and fumble recovery. He ranked as the third best fullback in the 2001 NFL Draft class by known draft analyst Mel Kiper after finishing up his college career at Northwestern State University (Natchitoches, Louisiana). Bivens ended up going undrafted, but did go to camp with the New York Giants. At Northwestern St., Bivens was used mostly as a blocking back with the Demons program from 1996 - 2000.
