December 3, 2008 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Former Milwaukee Brewers All-Star infielder Don Money has been named the Nashville Sounds' manager for the 2009 season. The announcement was made this afternoon by Reid Nichols, the Brewers' Special Assistant to the G.M./Director of Player Development.
Money will be joined on the Nashville bench in 2009 by a pair of new faces: pitching coach Chris Bosio and hitting coach Sandy Guerrero, along with returning trainer Jeff Paxson and strength & conditioning coach Tom Reynolds.
The 61-year-old Money, who enters his first season as a Triple-A manager and 12th year overall as an instructor in the Brewers organization, has compiled a 829-842 record (.496) in his 13 seasons as a minor league manager with Class A Oneonta (1987-88), Class A Beloit (1998-2004), and Class AA Huntsville (2005-08). Additionally, Money coached at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Vineland, New Jersey for five years, leading the team to two state tournaments.
Money - who becomes the 22nd manager in the Sounds' 32-year franchise history - comes to Music City from Double-A Huntsville, where he guided the Stars to the postseason in two of his four years at the helm and finished as the club's all-time winningest manager with 275 victories. He was tabbed as the 2007 Southern League Manager of the Year and coached in the 2007 MLB All-Star Futures Game.
His 2008 Huntsville club contained seven of the Milwaukee farm system's top 10 prospects, as rated by Baseball America, many of whom are expected to join Money in advancing to the Sounds in 2009.
Prior to entering the managerial ranks in 1987, Money enjoyed a 16-year Major League playing career with Philadelphia (1968-72) and Milwaukee (1973-83). A four-time All-Star and two-time team MVP with Milwaukee, he became the first Brewer to start in an All-Star Game (1978). He was a member of the 1982 American League Champion squad and was inducted into the Brewers' Walk of Fame in 2005.
Money replaces Frank Kremblas, who piloted the Sounds to a 299-273 record and three division titles during his four seasons at the helm from 2005-08.
Bosio, who pitched for parts of 11 seasons in the Major Leagues during a 15-year pro career from 1982-97, will serve his first year as a coach in the Brewers organization after spending the 2008 campaign as pitching coach for Class AA Chattanooga in the Cincinnati Reds system.
He compiled a 94-93 career record with a 3.96 ERA in 309 games in the big leagues, including hurling a nine-inning no-hitter for the Seattle Mariners on April 22, 1993 against the Boston Red Sox. In that game, he walked the first two batters then coaxed a double play in retiring the final 26 in order.
After his retirement, Bosio coached in the Seattle Mariners' farm system from 2000-02 - including a brief stint in the Pacific Coast League as pitching coach at Class AAA Tacoma - before joining the Tampa Bay Rays as their pitching coach in 2003. He spent the next four seasons coaching at the collegiate level before returning to pro ball with Chattanooga last year.
Guerrero spent the past six seasons working as the hitting coach at the Brewers' Double-A Huntsville affiliate. He began his coaching career with the Stars in 2003 following a 19-year professional playing career that included stints with two organizations (Blue Jays, Brewers), topping out at the Class AAA level, as well as stops in Mexico, Taiwan, and the independent leagues.
Bosio and Guerrero replace Stan Kyles and Harry Spilman, respectively, on the Nashville coaching staff. Kyles was recently promoted to a position as Milwaukee's bullpen coach, while Spilman, like Kremblas, was not retained by the Brewers organization following the 2008 season.
Paxson, the 2007 PCL Trainer of the Year and 2008 PCL All-Star trainer, returns to Music City in 2009 to serve his fifth season with the Sounds and his seventh year overall as Milwaukee's Class AAA trainer, while Reynolds returns to Nashville for his second season as the club's strength and conditioning coach.
The Sounds open their 2009 campaign on April 9 at Greer Stadium against New Orleans. Season tickets, mini-plan packages, and group outing plans for the 2009 season are currently on sale. Contact the Sounds at 615-242-4371 or visit www.nashvillesounds.com to order or for further details.
