Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, IN - The RailCats pitching staff combined to throw a three-hitter in a 2-1 win to complete the sweep of the Lincoln Saltdogs. The sweep flipped the standings in the American Association Central Division so the RailCats (20-16) now hold a two game lead over the Saltdogs (18-18).

EJ Devarie and Tillman Pugh provided the offense for the Cats on Sunday afternoon. Pugh reached base four times and scored the go-ahead run on a Devarie base hit in the 8th inning.

Karl Triana shut down the Saltdogs in a seven-inning start. He struck out six and allowed just three hits en route to recording his fourth quality start of the season. Christian Herstine earned the win in his home debut. He went one inning and struck out two batters. Taylor Black notched his sixth save of the year in a hitless 9th inning.

Saltdog starter Matt Larkins struggled through 6.1 innings but used the double play to get out of jams. He induced RailCat hitters into three double turns to hold them to one run through seven innings. Brad Orosey came on in relief and is charged with the loss after giving up the 8th inning run.

Pugh got the Cats ahead first in the 2nd inning. He reached on an error by Dan Hennigan and moved to second on a Jose Gonzalez base hit. After a Devarie walk, Pugh came home on an error by second baseman Pat Kelly.

The Saltdogs capitalized on poor defense as well, scoring an unearned run in the 6th. Austin Darby reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a throwing error by shortstop Jarred Mederos who was attempting to turn a double play.

The tie was broken in the bottom of the 8th inning. Pugh reached on a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Then, Devarie hit a line drive to right field and Pugh hesitated at second to make sure the ball fell in front of the right fielder Darby. The team's stolen base leader got the late "go' signal from third base coach Bobby Spain and slid in safely for the go-ahead run.

Brennan Metzger and Devarie each registered multi-hit games for the Cats. The defeneese turned three double plays but committed two errors. The sweep is part of a four game series-winning streak for Gary SouthShore. The top three pitchers in the Cats' rotation each have four quality starts on the season.

The RailCats bring the division lead on the road for a six game trip with stops in Winnipeg and Sioux City. The next game is Tuesday, June 28th at 7:00 PM and you can hear the action on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
