X's Win in Twelve Innings on Safety Squeeze

Sioux City, IA - Former Laredo Lemur and current Sioux City Explorer, Matt Koch lays down perfect sacrifice-bunt to score winning run at third base in the bottom of the twelfth. Explorers get the 6-5 victory in twelve innings at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park.

Laredo jumped to a huge lead early in the contest. Lemurs third baseman Cesar Valera racked up four quick runs with a grand-slam in the top of the first to take the 4-0 lead. Laredo added one more in the fourth on a sac-bunt.

Explorers recorded their first couple of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Matt Koch and Nate Samson each knocked in a run with an RBI double. X's centerfielder Matty Johnson hit a sacrifice-fly to center field, allowing the run to score at third base.

In the bottom of the fifth, Sioux City tied the game. Jarek Cunningham worked up a lead-off walk. With Cunningham at first and one out, Ralph Henriquez cranked a game tying two-run homer to make it 5-5 after five innings of play.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Explorers managed to have runners in scoring position on two different occasions, but were not able to take advantage, going scoreless in the ninth to force extra innings.

Sioux City scored the final run in walk off fashion, in the bottom of the twelfth. Tim Colwell doubled and moved to third on an error by the second baseman, putting him 90 feet away from home plate. Former Laredo Lemur and current Sioux City Explorer, Matt Koch lays down perfect sacrifice-bunt, scoring Colwell on a safety-squeeze to get the 6-5 victory over Laredo in twelve innings.

X's starter Ryan Zimmerman (2-4) finished with a no decision, allowing five runs (four earned) in six innings. Explorers right-hander Connor Overton (4-0) received the victory for Sioux City, pitching two scoreless innings.

Lemurs starting pitcher Kyle DeVore (0-1) ended with a no decision, giving up three runs in 3.2 innings pitched. Right-hander Jose Nivar (1-1) was charged with the loss for Laredo, allowing the winning run to score in the twelfth inning.

Sioux City will wrap up the series with Laredo, tomorrow at 7:00 at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park.
