Dogs Get Another Quality Start

June 25, 2014 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

FLORENCE, S.C. - For the third consecutive game, the SwampDogs got a great performance from their pitching staff, but unfortunately the defense let the team down and the SwampDogs dropped a tough contest to the Florence RedWolves 4-1 Wednesday night.

After the game cruised along without a score through the first four innings, the SwampDogs struck for the first run in the top of the fifth inning. Jacob Whiting reached base on a dropped third strike to lead off the inning, then Chase Edwards came up to try to sacrifice him over. After RedWolves catcher Conor Sullivan tried a snap throw to first base after the first pitch, Edwards was called out by home plate umpire Vincent Jackson for batter's interference. Jason Blum and Lane Paul laced back to back singles to load the bases. David Palenzuela then would bring home Whiting with a sacrifice fly to left field.

SwampDogs starting pitcher Ricky Rivera had his best outing of the season. He took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but lost it with one out when he surrendered an RBI double to Gene Cone, scoring Andrew Cox who led off the inning with a walk. Left fielder Norm Donkin made a great play, however, tracking the ball down and gunning down trail runner Brandon Chapman at home plate, who reached on an error earlier in the inning.

Things would unravel in the seventh for the SwampDogs, when three errors would lead to three unearned runs coming in to score off of Rivera, and the RedWolves would take a 4-1 lead which would hold for the remainder of the contest.

Rivera was the hard-luck loser for the SwampDogs, falling to 1-2 on the season. Ryan Griffith got the win for the RedWolves and is now 5-2 out of the bullpen. Michael Morrison recorded his CPL-leading eighth save of the season.

The Dogs are back at it Thursday night back at The Swamp as they play a doubleheader against the Petersburg Generals starting at 6:05 pm. For tickets and more information, call 910-426-5900.
