
Owls Fall To Gastonia

FOREST CITY - The Forest City Owls fell short Wednesday afternoon in Gastonia to the first place Grizzlies.
In a wild ninth inning in which the Owls thought they had runners at second and third with no outs, the umpires ruled runners interference, sending Joey Hawkins back to first base and called out Kyle Prats. A pop-up and a groundout ended the game and the Grizzlies escaped with a 2-1 victory.
The Owls got on the board first in the third inning after Steven Pallares reached on a single, stole a base and got to third off an error before Devin Wenzel drove him home with a sac fly.
The Grizzlies answered right back in the bottom half with four singles and took the lead after a walk issued to Jacob Heyward.
Taylor Thurber took the mound for the Owls this afternoon and in his fourth start of the year went six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and struck out three.
Steven Pallares was 2-2 on the night and Gibson, Bryant, Hawkins and Cheray each added a hit for the Owls who will return to Forest City to take on the Grizzlies in a double header tomorrow starting at 6:00 P.M, both games will be seven innings.
Tomorrow night will be man VS. food night with two huge promotional nights to follow.
Faith and family night will take place on Friday featuring multiple bands performing before the game so come out and enjoy live music before the game gets underway.
Saturday night will be Guns and Hoses night where policeman and firefighters will battle it out in a softball game at 5:00 before the Owls take on the Hi-Toms at 7:30.
The Owls will continue the 2014 season at home Thursday night as they take on Gastonia at 6:00 in a doubleheader. Fans can purchase season tickets, ý season plans and 5-game Fireworks plans by calling the Owls office at 828-245-0000. Key dates for the 2014 season include: Fireworks Games on Saturday July 5th and Saturday August 2nd. Single game tickets are on sale now. The Owls will also take on the Chinese Taipei National team on July 7th.
The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 18th season in 2014, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. The CPL has had over 1,100 alumni drafted and 65 of those - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut; while another notable alum - Russell Wilson - won Super Bowl XLVIII.
