Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers (35-50) fell to the Oklahoma City Dodgers (51-35) 8-1 on Wednesday night at Cheney Stadium. The Dodgers continued their offensive onslaught from Tuesday night (15 runs), scoring five times in the second inning and three times in the fifth. The Rainiers, on the other hand, could not get their bats going, scratching across six baserunners the entire game.
Rainiers RHP Daniel Ponce de Leon cruised through the first two innings, but ran into trouble in the top of the third. With the bases loaded and one out, a Ponce de Leon fastball ran inside on Ryan Noda, clipping him in the elbow and pushing across Drew Avans. Avans, upon singling earlier in the inning, increased his streak of consecutive games reaching base to 25. James Outman, coming off a two homer performance on Tuesday, followed Noda and crushed the second pitch of the at bat, sending it over the wall in right for a grand slam.
In the fifth, Oklahoma City added to their lead. They loaded the bases on a walk by Miguel Vargas, a single by Jason Martin and a hit-by-pitch of Noda, his second of the game. Outman then hit a sacrifice fly to center, collecting his 5th RBI of the game and increasing the Dodgers' lead to six. Two batters later, with the bases loaded once again, catcher Tomas Telis laced a single to right, scoring Martin and Noda.
After allowing 10 runs on Tuesday, the Rainiers bullpen pitched well in this one. Oklahoma City was held scoreless by the combination of LHP Nick Margevicius, RHP Drew Steckenrider, LHP Anthony Misiewicz and LHP Fernando Abad. The four Rainiers relievers went 4.2 innings, allowing just five baserunners while striking out three.
The Rainiers could not find success against Oklahoma City RHP Jon Duplantier in the starter's four innings of work. He struck out three Tacoma batters while allowing two hits and walking one. Beau Burrows relieved Duplantier and continued to stymie the home team. He had retired the first nine men he faced until Drew Ellis got the Rainiers on the board with a solo shot to left in the eighth inning. Burrows finished the game for the Dodgers, striking out five over five innings, giving up two hits and one walk. He did not allow another run after the Ellis bomb, and the Dodgers won 8-1.
Tacoma plays next on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. PT at Cheney Stadium against Oklahoma City. RHP Darren McCaughan gets the start for the Rainiers and will face RHP Michael Grove for the Dodgers.
