Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Jupiter, FL) - The Vero Beach Dodgers took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the 8th, but the Palm Beach Cardinals awoke offensively to post a 5-1 victory Friday night at Roger Dean Stadium. Alberto Bastardo and Wesley Wright combined to shut the Cardinals out for seven innings before Julio Pimentel suffered his second straight blown save opportunity. The series ends Saturday night at 6:05 PM. Bastardo returned to form after three lackluster outings. He scattered six hits over five innings and struck out four. Wright pitched perfect frames in the 6th and 7th and struck out the first five batters he faced. Wright has not allowed a run in the month of June. The Dodgers scored their only run in the 4th inning off Cardinals starter Mitchell Boggs. Cole Bruce followed a single from Blake DeWitt with one of his own. DeWitt was thrown at third, but Bruce advanced to second on the throw. Cory Dunlap then laced a 3-2 pitch down the right field line to plate Bruce and put the Dodgers ahead 1-0. The lead held until the 8th. Pimentel struck out his first batter but surrendered a single to Juan Lucena that skirted underneath the glove of Dodger shortstop David Nicholson. Ryan Barthelemy drew a walk and Matt Dryer followed with a base hit to left. That scored Lucena to tie and when the ball was mishandled, both runners advanced an extra base. Joe Mather then singled in two runs to put the Cards ahead 3-1 and advanced to second when Jamie Hoffman threw home. The nightmare inning continued when Mike Ferris singled to center to bring in Mather. However Ferris was thrown at second when the Dodgers cut off the relay throw. Pimentel then struck out Tyler Greene, but on the dropped third strike that would have ended the inning Greene reached first base safely. A walk and a single later brought in Greene to finish the 5-1 victory for Palm Beach.
