Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(Vero Beach, FL) - The Vero Beach Dodgers let a 5-1 lead slip away Saturday night in a 8-5 loss to the St. Lucie Mets at Holman Stadium. Vero Beach hit three solo home runs in the defeat. The Dodgers have the day off on Sunday but return to action on the road in Dunedin at 7:00 PM Monday night. The Dodgers built their early lead with the long balls and the stellar pitching of Marlon Arias. It was his first Florida State League start since a promotion from Columbus. The Domincian left-hander tossed six innings in which he allowed only one run on four hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. Vero gave him the lead on a Russ Mitchell solo shot in the first inning. After the Mets tied it on a Jose Cruz homer, Xavier Paul delivered a two-out, bases-loaded single in the fourth for a 3-1 advantage. Adolfo Gonzalez and Jamie Hoffmann added their solo home runs in the sixth for the 5-1 lead. St. Lucie rallied against the bullpen, however. An error and a single off Wesley Wright set up an RBI double from Jose Coronado. Later in the inning Mike Carp would double in two more runs to pull the Mets within 5-4. Kyle Wilson (2-6) struck out the last batter of the seventh, but ran into his own trouble in the eighth. Jamar Hill led off with a double and scored on Tony Piazza's single to tie it. After a walk and a pop out, Coronado singled in Piazza to give the Mets their first lead. The relay throw to third base on that play went wild, which then allowed both runners to score and put the Mets on top 8-5. Vero loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but Carlos Muniz came in for the final out to record his 27th save. The win for the Mets gives them the Treasure Coast Cup, awarded annually to the winner of the Vero Beach - St. Lucie head-to-head series. The Mets are 11-5 against the Dodgers with four games remaining between them.
