Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Vero Beach, FL) - Seven different Dodgers scored as Vero Beach earned a split of the four game series at Daytona with a 9-3 win over the Cubs Friday night. Blake DeWitt hit his first home run of the season and Scott Elbert earned his first win. The Dodgers return home Saturday night at 7:00 PM for Baseball Giveaway Night, courtesty of Indian River Memorial Hospital.

Daytona scored a run in the first to take an early lead, but the Dodgers took advantage of a wild third inning to go on top. Jamie Hoffman and Gabriel Gutierrez drew back-to-back walks off starter Mark Holliman.

Ryan Russ then squared to bunt, but was hit on the hand. He was awarded first base, which drew a swift argument from the Cubs dugout. Daytona Pitching Coach Tom Pratt was eventually ejected for arguing the play after a visit to the mound.

The play stood and Holliman then hit David Nicholson to bring in the tying run. An error on the following play score two more. Travis Denker then lifted a sacrifice fly to center, putting the Dodgers ahead 4-1. To recap: that's four runs on no hits.

Vero added to the lead in more traditional fashion in the fourth. Cole Bruce, Chris Westervelt and Hoffman all singled to start the inning and load the bases. Gutierrez hit a sac fly to right to plate Bruce. Russ singled in Hoffman and Nicholson brought home Westervelt with a base hit to center.

DeWitt's homer led off the seventh inning and the Dodgers capped the scoring in the ninth with another unearned run. Denker and Nicholson each drove in two runs. Russ and Hoffman scored twice. Nicholson, DeWitt and Westervelt all knocked out two hits.

Elbert allowed a season-high three runs, but pitched well enough for his first Florida State League win. He entered the game with a 2.19 ERA, but the Dodgers had scored just a total of 7 runs in his first five starts. Brian Akin threw three scoreless innings to pick up his second save of the year.
