AFL I Arena Football League (1987-2008)

Division crowns on the line this weekend

Published on May 12, 2005 under Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release

NEW YORK – The AFLWA's No.2-ranked New York Dragons (9-5) and No. 3-ranked Los Angeles Avengers (9-5) will have a chance to clinch their respective division titles with victories as 12 teams remain alive for the remaining seven spots in the Drive to ArenaBowl XIX Las Vegas. Currently, the Georgia Force are the only team to clinch for postseason play (see below for this weekend's playoff scenarios.)

The Avengers, who are led by All-Arena WR/DB KEVIN INGRAM (6-0, 195, West Chester), face hot-handed QB CLINT DOLEZEL (6-5, 195, East Texas State) and Western Division rival Las Vegas Gladiators (8-6) this Saturday at STAPLES Center at 10:30 p.m. ET on FSN West and INHD. This game has major playoff implications for both teams.

The Dragons, who are led by former All-Arena QB AARON GARCIA (6-1, 195, Sacramento State), face seven-time ArenaBowl champion head coach TIM MARCUM and the Tampa Bay Storm at St. Pete Times Forum this Sunday at 3 p.m. ET on NBC. New York wins the Eastern Division with a win and Tampa Bay can claim a berth with a win and some help.

Former AFL head coach and NFL linebacker RAY BENTLEY will join AFL on NBC studio host AL TRAUTWIG and analyst GLENN PARKER in the studio for halftime commentary, game look-ins and interviews.

In Atlanta, Coach of the Year candidate DOUG PLANK and the AFLWA's No. 1-ranked Georgia Force (10-4) host Rookie of the Year candidate QB CLINT STOERNER (6-2, 210, Arkansas) and the Dallas Desperados (7-6-1) at Philips Arena this Saturday at 7 p.m. ET on FSN South, FSN Southwest and The Score (Canada). A victory by the Force, coupled with a New York loss, would clinch the top seed in the National Conference. Dallas looks to stay in the playoff hunt.

Games slated for Week 16 include: Nashville at Colorado (Comcast-Colorado) on Friday; Dallas at Georgia (FSN South, FSN Southwest, The Score-Canada), Austin at New Orleans (Cox Sports), San Jose at Arizona (WB20-San Jose) and Las Vegas at Los Angeles (FSN West, INHD) on Saturday; New York at Tampa Bay (NBC), Grand Rapids at Chicago and Columbus at Philadelphia. NASHVILLE KATS (6-7) AT COLORADO CRUSH (9-5)
FRIDAY, MAY 13 AT 9 P.M. ET
COMCAST (COLORADO) & AFLNET (www.arenafootball.com)
MITCH HYDER, DAVID DIAZ-INFANTE & JOSH GROSS

After losing seven of their first eight games this season, the Nashville Kats are unbeaten in their last six games... The Colorado Crush is currently leading the Central Division, which should present no threat to the Kats who have beaten playoff contenders in three of their last four wins (Los Angeles, San Jose, Tampa Bay)... This is the second meeting between the Kats and the Crush this season... The Crush came out on top in Week 7, 42-35... In that game, the Kats were without starting QB LEON MURRAY... In the past four games, Murray has completed 69-of-110 passes for 829 yards, 20 TDs and no INTs, with each performance resulting in a win... Crush QB JOHN DUTTON, who completed 68% of his passes for 232 yards and six TDs in the Week 7 win, is ranked No. 2 in the League in touchdowns (82) and No. 6 in passing yards (3,583)... Dutton's favorite target, OS DAMIAN HARRELL, is leading the team and is ranked No. 4 in the League in receiving yards (1,313), No. 6 in receptions (106) and is tied at No. 3 in scoring (222 PTS, 37 TDs)... Harrell has also had a TD reception in 47 consecutive games, an AFL record... Nashville's' No. 1-ranked defense (44.1 PPG) includes WR/DB KHALIL CARTER and DS DERON JENKINS... Carter is tied for the League lead with seven INTs and Jenkins is ranked No. 12 in combined tackles (72.0)... Crush DS RASHAD FLOYD leads the League in combined tackles with 109.5 and needs 13.0 tackles in the remaining two games to break his own single-season record of 122.0, which he set in 2004... Crush head coach MIKE DAILEY is 3-0 against Kats head coach PAT SPERDUTO... Dailey was triumphant over the original Kats in 1999 and 2000 as the coach of the Albany Firebirds... His third win over Sperduto came in Week 7.

The Georgia Force won their first Southern Division championship last week by defeating Tampa Bay 52-40... The Force will finish the season with their first winning record and their first home playoff game in franchise history... With a Force win and a New York loss this weekend, the Force will have home-field advantage through out the playoffs... Dallas is a half-game back of the last available Wild-Card spot... The Desperados, who are one and a half-games out of first, can still win the Eastern Division if they win their two remaining games (Force, Philadelphia 6-8) and the Dragons loose their remaining two (Tampa Bay 8-6, Colorado 9-5)... The Desperados can also make the playoffs as a Wild Card if, in the final two weeks of the regular season, they win one more game than Tampa Bay and New Orleans... In 2003, the Force and Desperados were tied at 8-6 and met in Week 16, in Georgia and the Desperados won 56-55... Two weeks later, the Force defeated the Desperados 49-45 in the first round of the playoffs... Desperados QB CLINT STOERNER is 280-of-450 passing for 3,451 and 67 TDs and is on pace to break several rookie passing records... Stoerner, whose 67 TD passes is a rookie best, is also on pace to break the records for attempts (484), completions (295) and yards (3,787), set by JIM KUBIAK in 2001 with Buffalo... Force WR/DB DEREK LEE has 97 receptions for 1,065 yards and 27 TDs and is only nine receptions away from breaking the record for most receptions by a rookie (105) set by MICHAEL BAKER with St. Louis in 1996... Force rookie OS TROY BERGERON (1,198) needs to average 69 receiving yards over the next two games to break ORONDE GADSDEN's record for most receiving yards by a rookie (1,335) ... Bergeron is averaging 74.56 receiving yards against teams with winning records... This will be the first game between Desperado head coach WILL MC CLAY and Force head coach DOUG PLANK... Plank and McClay were defensive coordinators before being named head coaches... A win this weekend will make the Force the first team to go undefeated at home since the League expanded its schedule to 16 games.

SATURDAY, MAY 14 AT 8 P.M. ET
COX SPORTS & AFLNET (www.arenafootball.com)
TODD KALAS & JIM PYNE

New Orleans is tied with Tampa Bay at 8-6... Tampa Bay owns the tie-breaker for the last available Wild-Card spot... A VooDoo loss and a Tampa Bay win would eliminate the VooDoo from the playoffs... Austin has been eliminated from the playoffs and are using the remainder of their season to play the role of the spoiler... Last week, the Wranglers defeated Orlando 56-42, preventing the Predators from winning the Southern Division... The VooDoo started the season 3-0 at home, but have since lost three of their last four... The Wranglers are 2-5 when playing their Southern Division rivals, while the VooDoo are 1-5... The VooDoo's only win this season against a Southern Division opponent was a 56-55 win against the Wranglers in Week 10... Last season, the VooDoo won the Southern Division by defeating the Wranglers 38-21 in Week 17... In the VooDoo's 63-57 loss to Colorado last week, VooDoo QB ANDY KELLY was 28-of-42 passing for 272 yards and seven TDs... The 28 completions set a new single-season record for most completions by a team (413) and the seven TD passes made Kelly the second player in professional football to throw for over 700 TDs... Kelly leads the League in attempts (616) and completions (409) and is on pace to break the single-season record for both (392, 654), which he set in 2003 while with Detroit... VooDoo OS AARON BAILEY leads the League in receptions (127), is ranked No. 2 in receiving yards (1,505), No. 5 in scoring (192) and No. 9 in all-purpose yards (1,810)... Wrangler OL/DL AARON HUMPHREY is tied at No. 3 in forced fumbles (4) and will line up against VooDoo OL/DL MICHAEL LANDY, who is tied at No. 6 in the League in forced fumbles (3)... VooDoo OL/DL B.J. COHEN (23.0) and Wrangler OL/DL TOM BRIGGS (22.0) are two-of-four players to record more than 20.0 sacks over the past four seasons.
